At least one of the senior players is under no illusions as to where the team is, despite the Freo win. 'Spose we should take some reassurance from that...

Played smart footy Saturday, and also analyses the game pretty smartly.
Micky sez, "(Adelaide and West Coast) are the best teams in the competition at the moment."
In fact, the question at the moment is, 'Who is the 3rd best team in the comp?', because daylight is 2nd after Adelaide.
Has there ever been a team that has had a percentage 47% better than the 2nd-ranked team, this deep into a season? I doubt it. The team that most overwhelmingly dominated the competition in recent memory-- the Essendon team of 2000-- had 'only' 28% on the second-ranked team after R13 in that year. Compared with that overhyped team, Adelaide have flown under the radar somewhat because their 2 early losses and WCE's winning run meant they didn't get to the top of the table until recently.
As an all-round unit, they are better than the St Kilda team that came here in round 11, 2004 (which was the last time we played a home game against a team widely considered near-unbeatable). Man-for-man, they are clearly inferior in talent to that St Kilda team, but are so much better drilled and mentally stronger it's not funny. Their mammoth wins aren't the Sydney 1980s wins of a team of champions playing Harlem Globetrotters show-off football against a dispirited opposition; they're the wins of an extraordinarily disciplined team that never relaxes or starts lairising, even when they're 10 goals up.
There could be no possible better indication of how we are really placed than this week's game. While, based on form to date, Sydney aren't on the same planet as Adelaide, they have a happy history in recent years of rising to a challenge against the absolute best teams. I can hardly wait! -

Haven't ween WC play for a while, but adelaide were relentless against the cats yesterday. The goals the cats did get, they worked damned hard for. Whereas the Crows made everything look easy. Had plenty of runners.Comment

Lots of nice little things follow too, like accurate kicking for goal, team play, easily covering for team mates, hemming the ball in the F50 e.t.c. (all sounds too familiar doesn't it?).The Pain of Discipline is Nothing Like The Pain of DisappointmentComment

Yes it will be fascinating to see which Sydney team turns up this week. Surely match of the round and the potential to be match of the season in terms of contenders. Now this is a thread that i would expect on the ego -centric, wank session that is redandwhiteonline.com...

By way of contrast, the treatment of the Blions by the Melbourne media was relatively unenthusiastic until they won the 3rd in a row in 2003. Only then did they start getting substantial 'greatest team for decades' accolades.Comment

There was a lot of media nonsense about 'is this the greatest team of all time?' etc going into the 2001 H&A season, whereas obviously that type of thing should be measured by premierships. Now, they're just looked back on as should-have-beens.
We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty.Comment
