no. that is not implied.

this does not demonstrate that the canberra league is of a standard anywhere near that of the vfl but it does demonstrate that the combination of the canberra league and the in-club training produces an environment that allows young players to develop.

the logic of the article is that good performances in one game by four players leads to the conclusion that the Canberra league is working well. That is followed by various suggestions as to why the canberra league is advantageous (e.g. coaches have more control etc.)

Using this logic, if they had played poorly, then on the same basis, it should have should have concluded that the canberra league is not performing well.

If not then they are post hoc rationalising to support a preferred position (which they clearly are).

I find it uncanny that most critical threads (e.g reserves in the ACTAFL, Mathews, Chambers) are followed by puff pieces on the official website within days.

I agree with you hammo, it certainly is interesting. Seems like someone must check RWO, and when a number of threads point to the same thing, something appears to be done, even if it is just saying that we are talking rubbish.

The timing can't be coincidental, can it?

I agree with you hammo, it certainly is interesting. Seems like someone must check RWO, and when a number of threads point to the same thing, something appears to be done, even if it is just saying that we are talking rubbish.

I would think that Paul Roos might have a few more important issues than seeking to rebute the suggestions of some on RWO. Although I guess it does perhaps stoke our egos to believe that we have a certain voice within the club.

The main point that Roos seems to be making is that by playing the reserves in Canberra the coaches can keep a closer eye on things and get the reserves/younsters to play a certain way and style that will be beneficial for their eventual call up to the seniors.

no it shouldn't. if the three had played badly then it would be inconclusive. yes, the quality of their preparation in the canberra league would warrant investigation, but it is also plausible that as individuals they were not yet up to it or just put in poor performances.

from the performances they delivered we can say that the canberra matches in combination with their training is not preventing their ascent.

He bought in four youngsters from the seconds - Paul Bevan, Luke Vogels, Jarred Moore and Sean Dempster - and they all made important contributions to the Swans overturning recent poor form to beat Fremantle.

More spin than Shane Warne circa 1993...

Bevan - has two seasons of seniors behind him, a decent showing in the rising star in 04 and a premiership medallion.

Dempster - has a full season behind him and a premiership medallion.

Vogels - came to the club as a 'mature' recruit, showed his worth last season as a pretty developed footballer, was instrumental in winning a game off his own boot and can consider himself unlucky not to have a premiership medallion.

Moore - came to club last season and again has demonstrated his ability in senior football last season.

most of the issues come up here in response to reasonably apparent problems. while i have a lot of respect for the detailed analysis given by many on this site, it is usual that topics of conversation pop up here that are already pointed out by commentators, cited in other media, bleeding obvious (ie pointed out by robert walls) or otherwise floating around in general conciousness.

i think it is quite likely that in most cases the swans are actually way ahead of us or prompted by the same things we are. many will cite instances where it is claimed that the swans were behind us in thinking (for example dumping chambers et al last week) but imagine roos would argue that his timing was right and we would have been premature.

additionally, it is rare that we reach a consensus on anything here and coaching has never worked well as a democracy.

Not so. The fault in your logic is that we don't know how well they would have played if they had been developing in a decent competition. For all we know, Moore could be better than Chris Judd except that he has had his development retarded because he's playing against 38 year old codgers who drink and smoke too much and 14 year old kids who haven't started shaving.

If the competition doesn't matter, why did they leave the Sydney league?
