    Swans Song.

Anyone know why the players sing,................ ( ".....Wether the odds be great or be small..............."

But the official version is, ( ".......Wether the odds be great.....or small.........."

    Any ideas?

The official version used to be "what though the odds be great or small". I hate that they changed it. It was delightfully archaic.

And most people still sing that version, I know I do.

Me too. It's irritating that after all the times I've corrected people for singing "whether", they go and change the official version.

My wife was new to footy last year and asked me about it. I told her they had changed the official version from what it used to be. I can llive with that, but when they played a version of "Cheer cheer" at the Dome in round 1, it didn't have a banjo solo, now that is sacrilege!

I don't know when it happened that I learned to love the banjo version. But after all those years of cringeing, it always puts a smile on my face these days.

Some of them haven't been turning up for singing practice.

Chairman Colless officially changed the words this year for the benefit of the rest of our comrades.

I always thought that there was no "or". Just, "be great or small". I like the "what though" much better. I reckon the leadership group probably had a finger in the change - player empowrment and all that. Would never have changed if the club stayed in Melbourne, I can tell you that!

I have a copy of an old South recording, and the words are definitely "what though the odds be great or small".

In fact, I think the current version IS that version, only with "Swans" dubbed semi-badly over "South" lol

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

All Swans are recruited equal, unless you're name is Nick Davis.

I heard they'll cut the banjo solo next.
