No surprise there.

So that leaves us with

11 Sydney
2 Canberra
6 Melbourne
1 Adelaide
1 Perth
1 Brisbane

I'm unsure if the AFL will stick with the 6 Melbourne matches for us. There is always the risk too of a double trip to Perth or Adelaide, and I'm sure the AFL are eyeing us for a match on the GC. Makes 6 games in melbourne look difficult. This doesn't eveb factor in Geelong

It's going to be interesting to see who the AFL selects to play against the 'Roos at Carrara.

Playing either Brisbane or Sydney potentially leads to the same problem that they encountered in having a hostile 'home' crowd in Canberra when they played the Swans.

Fair draw. The AFL gave Sydney and Brisbane an extra home game (technically "away", but lets not fool ourselves), so that each team would have at least 12 games in their home state. Maximum 10 travelling trips.
Of course Adelaide and Perth teams get 12 games at home because of the derby's.

With the Gold Coast now an AFL venue, there is little need for this extra home game, as Brisbane can get their 12th game just down the road. Similarly for the Swans, where Canberra isnt seen as too taxing a road trip.

All good.

You must be in Sydney? I am being purely selfish here but I am looking forward to the day when Melbourne clubs dont play their home games against us interstate (including in Sydney). That day may never come again!!!

Melb supporters only get 5-6 games, some of those games are either difficult to get tickets too (e.g. Geelong) or more expensive (e.g.Essendon) so we sometimes only get 4-5 games for our memberships

Losing potential Melbourne games against teams like Melbourne, Bulldogs etc means 6 games is the best we can hope for...5 is more realistic. If we are going to have only a few games it becomes imperative that they get the schedule right - last year we had no games in Melb till Round 10, this year we had most of our games in the first 1/2 of the year

I also dont like to lose Melbourne games that would normally be played at the MCG (such as Melbourne) as I think its good for us to play games there prior to any September action

So next year it would seem that we should hope that the Kangaroos game is played here, maybe StKilda, Richmond, Hawthorn, Essendon and Carlton (as it seems we are destined to play Collingwood only once a year in Sydney)

From a team perspective however I can see Canberra games becoming as good as a home game

So we are basicly trading 1 SCG and 1 Canberra for 2 Canberra?

I think the AFL is backward thinking that they have to get swans to play in these games, it's not developing the game if 10,000 people come down the highway, surely having 40,000 at home or at telstra would be more benificial.

Yep, max of 6 Vic games, and they won't be against Melb, WB or Coll (who we only play once, in the split round). As they are 3 of this year's best 4 Melbourne teams, I guess its not a bad thing that we don't have to play them at their home ground.

We're looking at the same old teams for the Melbourne games - choose from Ess, Carl, Haw, Gee, Rich, St K plus now NM.

With 2 games in Cba, I doubt we'll have to go to the GC. North is on record as saying they'd like their 3 games to be against Brisbane, a (higher drawing) Melbourne club, and a (lower drawing) interstate club, which you'd think would be from Adelaide or Perth.

Incidentally, the nominal 'toughness' of the draw is based on ladder posns after Round 15, when we were 6th. At the very least that should mean that we avoid having to play both Adelaide and WCE twice.

I read on afl.com.au a while back (and because the site is so crap, I can't actually find it now) that the 2006 draw was the last year the draw would be based on Rd 15 ladder from the previous year. The AFL have got themselves a program used by the NFL (IIRC) that allows them to do the draw factoring in requests from clubs for certain fixtures alot more quickly and so when preparing the 2007 draw, they will be able to base it on the ladder after Rd 22.

Isn't the point of using the ladder after round 15 that everyone has played everyone else once, not that it takes so long that they have to start work then?

I agree with you and think it makes more sense that way, but their argument was that the ladder can often change from Rd 15 - Rd 22 and thus impact the draw for the following year.

Take for example our draw this year. We play 4 teams twice who were in the 8 after Rd 15, 2005 (Geelong, 3rd; Melbourne, 4th; Richmond, 6th; Brisbane, 8th). Yet based on the 8 after Rd 22, we only play 3 teams who finished the H&A season in the 8 twice - Geelong, Melbourne and Port who finished in positions 6-8.

The big issue about the AFL basing any draw on ladder positions is that its very convenient for them to throw that out the window to ensure big drawing teams play each other twice regardless eg Carlton-Collingwood, Collingwood-Essendon, Carlton-Essendon.

I would be happy for the swans to only play 3 or 4 games in melbourne and 15 or 16 in Sydney and Canberra and only 1 in perth and Adelaide and Brisbane.That kind of draw for us would be great.

Well despite being based in Sydney, I think it is great news that we aren't losing any more games in Melb. The fanbase, and the experience of playing on the MCG is vital to our success.

Forget Marn Grook, though. Games in Canberra is the true tokenism in the AFL.

Manuka is an appalling venue that can't cope with the support the Swans muster there.

I've been there twice in the last three years and am yet to successfully purchase a pie or take a piss.
