Form and fitness or not?

Roos quotes.

"I even read on the weekend where it was said Nick Davis was dropped for disciplinary reasons. It was form and fitness, so even that got mixed up in the whole scenario. Quote the whole article. I've been in Nick's corner throughout this whole thing. He has said that none of the players that played against Melbourne last weekend deserved to be dropped, thus leaving Nick as a reserve once more.

Perfectly acceptable explanation as it'd be a bit stiff to drop any of our forwards after last weekend.

Despite the fact that i really want Nick to play as much as alot of people do!

Quote the whole article to your heart's content; this is one I didn't butcher. Roos statements were not surrounded by any double-speak, he has said very plainly:

1. Nick Davis was dropped for form and fitness.
2. The best 22 is based on, first and foremost, form and fitness.
3. In terms of his form and fitness, Davis has done everything right... he's ready to go.

I simply interpreted his third point to mean he's put in the effort. i.e. he hasn't done anything wrong with his approach he just didn't make the final 22.

And look, I understand Roos' point that nobody deserves to be dropped if they successfully perform the tasks requested of them prior to the game (and the word coming out of Swans HQ for the past couple of years is that's how it works). Obviously that would be a bit stiff and perhaps the whole team philosophy would break down if it happened.

But do you reckon Hall would be in the reserves and Grundy in the seniors this weekend if Hall was coming back from "regaining form and fitness"?

He's only ranked against the forward line so he's not really 23rd. In all honesty, the only forward I would be comfortable seeing dropped in lieu of Davis would be Schneider and ONLY because he's a little out of touch. With Schneider in form, I'm struggling to see a swap anywhere up forward.

Davis represents a perfect opportunity for Roos to groom what looms as our next Hall - Grundy.

That is, with Davis out, Grundy is seeing plenty of the ball and is fast becoming a revelation.

Given all the positive comments from Roos and players over the past two weeks, its quite puzzling that Davis didn't get picked this week. The only reason I can think of is that they're not sure who to drop, so want to have another look at them all in the seniors.

I could name at least a dozen players that Davis is "better" than. Starting with Bevan & Dempster. I can't believe Roos regards them as being better than Davo.

Can you see Davis playing the role that either Dempster or Bevan plays? Or anyone else currently in the playing as a goal kicking midfielder or hard running forward (whichever interpretation of the role Davis needs to play you prefer to use) moving into Dempster or Bevan's roles with Davis slotting into their role?

Dempster and Bevan are essentially part of the Sydney defence (even when playing in the middle of the ground). This isn't Davis' wont. Therein lies the problem of making a one-for-one swap with one of those two.

Comparing Hall and Davis is a bit of a daft comparison mate. Most valuable forward in the competition vs a player who can be dropped without seemingly affecting the team's results? No comparison at all.

Crouch would be a more suitable swap for Bevan but given how Davis would be super keen to perform any role just to get back into the seniors, I'm sure he could be asked to play Bevan's role. He would have to focus on stopping his opponent, but apart from that he would have the onerous task of being a part of all those handball receives and cheap stats which is so much part of a defender's role these days. And shock horror, he may actually be able to deliver the ball with penetration rather than give off a little dinky Bevan kick or miss the target altogether.

And for those who measure stats as part of performance, perhaps they'd like to double the value of those who get most of theirs within the forward 50. Defenders from all teams rack up meaningless stats passing the ball around in their defensive zones.
