    Presidents of South Melbourne & Sydney Swans

    Can anyone here list the Presidents of South Melbourne/Sydney Swans down the years?

    AFAIK it has been

    Sydney Swans FC

    * Graeme John (1978-1981)
    * Jack Marks (1981-1985)
    * Dr. Geoffrey Edelsten (1985-1986)

    * Peter Weinert (1988-1993)
    * Richard Colless (1993-present)

    Is that correct? There is a gap there - and I don't know who's name, or names should go in the gap!!!

    Please go to this page and fix up the Sydney section if there are any corrections to make.

    Cheers

      Mike Willesee was a part-owner with Dr Geoff.
      Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
      Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

        I have to correct you there there was no connection between the Dr Edelstone ownership group and Mike Willesee. Peter Weinert and Willesee were involved in a separate consortium. cheers Ian

          Really??
          Well when he was interviewed by Andrew Denton last week, he said that he was a part owner of the swans with Dr Geoff.
          Came straight from the horses mouth (so to speak).
          I have a transcript of the interview if you want a copy.

            ANDREW DENTON: By the late 80s you'd made a considerable amount of money, somewhere in excess of 50 million dollars, and I think you were the owner of the Swans for a while...

            MIKE WILLESEE: Part owner.
            No mention of Edelsten.

              I saw the interview with Andrew Denton I did not hear him say he was a part owner with the Dr he spoke about being involved with the Swans, I am sure Willesee and his group brought the Swans after the collapse of Powerplay if I am wrong I am happy to apologize. cheers Ian

                Apologies.

                My thought was that he had implied he had owned he swans with Dr Geoff.

                Should we concur that he could possibly have part owned it between Dr Geoff and Peter Weinert (1987-1988)??

                Isn't there anything on the swans website?

                  FROM THE SWANS WEBSITE

                  That initial success, however, was shortlived, and the Club?s tenuous hold on its new home was further complicated in 1985, when the VFL agreed to one of the messiest deals ever associated with football ? one which was to have significant and far-reaching ramifications for the Club. On 31st July 1985, for what was thought to be $6.3 million, Dr Geoffrey Edelsten bought the Swans. In reality it was $2.9 million in cash, with funding and other payments spread over five years. A period of relative on-field success followed, with an array of stars including Greg Williams, Merv Neagle, Bernard Toohey and Gerard Healy lured to Sydney to join the likes of Warwick Capper, the first player to kick a hundred goals in a season for the Club since Bob Pratt in 1935. However, success on the field was not translated to financial security, membership or a sustainable structure. Edelsten resigned as chairman after less than twelve months. By the end of 1988, ownership passed to a group of investors led by John Geraghty, Mike Willessee and Basil Sellers.
                  Cheers,

                    No worries Annie that peice from the Swans website is interesting I have always thought that Peter Weinert did not perhaps get the recognition he deserved for the part he played in saving the club Willesee was the high profile person but it was Weinert who mentioned to the Collingwood president that Carlton had their eyes on Sydney and it was he who gave a rousing address to the board of club directors at that crucial meeting which gave the club its lifeline.

                    Of course he was awarded life membership of the club for all his efforts but he seems to be a very humble man and he will live forever in the history of our club cheers Ian

                            Last year, arriving in Melbourne on GF morning, I ended up sharing a cab into the city with this fella who eventually 'fessed up that he'd been a part owner in the Swans with Willessee.

                            I said something along the lines of "Well, if we win today it will all have been worth it". He smiled and nodded - then stopped and said "No, not really" with a rueful smile. I get the feeling they lost some serious dough on that little investment!

                              Lost some dough, saved our butts.
                              He'll get into heaven when he dies ... that'll be his reward (along with the lifetime membership).
