    News of the day.

Injured Hall set to face Blues
    Swans out to thrash Blues
    I won't rest stars: Roos

So we are striving for an away final in Perth, week one. A sense of Deja Vu.

Hall, Darren Jolly, Ben Mathews, Adam Goodes, Leo Barry, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Michael O'Loughlin, Brett Kirk, Ryan O'Keefe, Nick Fosdike and Luke Ablett were all restricted to drills, but Roos said that was not unusual.
So they pulled Mathews from the Ressies, knowing he was still injured, rather than an Emergency??

wasn't Giant after names of players who were playing injured when Roos said that there were 11 players who did not train fully before the Collingwood game. Well that list equals 11 players.

Since when does 'restricted to drills' = 'playing injured'?

"Restricted to drills" can mean they are not fully fit. Playing not fully fit, playing injured...same thing isn't it?

Get the puck out of puck and along to a training session at the SCG, at any given training session half the team will just be doing drills- I believe the players refer to it as the Pina Colada Club. Hall and O'Loughlin are the number one, card holding members of the club.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Since it means "not full training".

He as been out for a month or so, recovering from an injury, a couple of games in the ressies, then leap frogs emergency named players into the team, then is still restricted to drills.

            You do the maths.

Now i really feel for someone like Josh Willoughby and Spriggs who have been fully fit and firing in the reserves...their form definately warrants selection over an un fit Ben Mathews.

I don't rate Spriggs, but I don't see what Matthews offers us that Spriggs can't, excpet a premiership medallion.

I'm not a massive Spriggs fan either but his form in the reserves has been very consistent and with the it looks like the form from some of our youngsters who have tasted senior action has transfered over fairly well. I still think he deserves his chance.

Mathews is a guy I don't rate. Not sure why, it just seems that every time he gets the ball he has no idea what to do with it.

But I watched the grand final again yesterday and it made me realise why the club thinks so highly of him. His tackling and work off the ball was first class and he beat his man hands down.

Ok he is never going to be a Chris Judd, but Mathews is an important cog to the defensive aspect of our team. So I can see why he was rushed back in and agree that he would offer a lot more than a dud like Spriggs.

But wouldn't you say his pressure skills rely on him being completely match fit? You are not much of a tag if you cannot keep up - and he has never been over-endowed with pace.

Not necessarily, it could mean they are @@@@ at kicking goals and therefore needed goalkicking practice

Goal kicking practice is a bit different to being restricted to doing drills.

In any case, if that's the case they should all be doing goal kicking practice.

our interpretation of what a drill is must be different. I'm sure it was called a drill when I was playing. Had cones set up in different positions to kick from, run to one have a kick, receive a handball, run to another cone have a kick, take a mark have a shot on the run, rinse and repeat.
