AFL official statement: Eighth not a possibility for Swans

While some felt they would suffer a premiership hangover this season, they are still in the hunt for a top four spot and can finish no worse than seventh pending their game against Carlton on Sunday.

Well mathematically we can finish 8th, but the likelihood of that happening is well, as close to zero as you can get. Making up 20% in percentage across two games at the end of the season is virtually impossible...

    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Percentage-wise, the Bulldogs can snatch 7th spot if they beat Essendon by 100 points and St. Kilda lose to Brisbane by 100 points. If the Lions were in their 2001-2004 form, it would be easy but since that era is long gone now, the Saints are hot favourites at the 'Gabba.

In other words, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the Swans won't be 8th at the Round 22...

Richmond will finish ninth. As usual.

A bit of a favourite comment this one, but it's not really that 'usual'.

It happened in 1996, 98 and 2000, as such it has now been called usual or traditional. If it happens again this year it will be 4 out of 11 seasons. In the words of Richard Stubbs, "What are the odds?"

Since the introduction of the final 8 in 1994, Richmond have finished 9th (just out of the finals) four times, in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000. If they do it again this year, that would be five times in 13 seasons, or 38.5% of all final-8 seasons. The statistical average for a 16-team competition is 6.25% of the time. If Richmond do finish ninth for a fifth time, Richmond would have to avoid finishing ninth in 67 seasons to bring these statistics back to the statistical average.

Betting agencies offer premiership, final-8 and wooden-spoon odds. If they offered 9th-position odds, Richmond would start favourite at the beginning of each season.

Yeah, I guess that's reasonably 'usual' but I found it funny as it hasn't happened for 6 years.

I don't know. I'll ask Richard when I see him!

Wow, a 6-year drought is about to be broken!

                        Q. What's the definition of a Richmond premiership?
                        A. Finishing as "best of the rest" - ninth.

It's strange, I actually thought it had happened more often than that until I looked it up on AFL Tables. I guess because it happened 3 times in 5 years it stuck in many peoples minds.

That was sort of my point.
