    The Schneids

    Ok, what's happened to him?

Earlier in the season, he was D.A.N.G.E.R.O.U.S!

Now, he hardly sees any of the ball.

My girlfriend drew a very interesting link between Goodes' recent 'peak'* mid-season followed by a sudden, almost overnight drop in Schneider's prominence up forward.

She's not sure whether this link is in any way relevant and I'm damned if I can see what it is either.

Maybe they're playing Schneider too far forward given Goodes' emerging midfield role**

    * Sure, Goodes has played well all season but there was a point when he just 'popped' and the Brownlow odds got rapidly smaller.
** Sure, you can't pigeonhole Goodes but that IS his unofficial official position.

Geez, why do I get the feeling I must qualify everything I say about this guy?

They are doing a Davis - They dont kick him the ball
Not sure - last weekend when he started getting the ball off the halfback line in the 4th quater - he looked very unsteady and just looked a bit unsure - his disposal, subsequently, suffered and he just wouldnt back himself - good example was he was in the clear in the middle and he gave off a nothing handball to someone standing almost next to him cause he didnt want to run it.
Not sure whats happened to him but would love to see him get back up and running for finals.
And the man who started it, the Schneiderman, can kick his third for the quarter. And the swans are in the Grand Final!

I think you're on track though. Supply has definitely dried up and he looks pretty lost up there. What I'm struggling with is whether his performance drop is due to a shift in his role, form, supply, position or a combination thereof....

Then I think it can't be a combination because it was so sudden.

Well I reckon kicking the ball to a forward contest as opposed to OVER it may help a crumber. Currently our delivery is the worst it has been all season and the worst type of bad. When the ball is hitting hands and contests and spilling, that's when Schneids has opportunity.

Sorry royboy, I'm just protecting myself from comments like "peak! What are you talking about! He's only getting started!" and "popped! What? He's been great all season!". Kind of a joke but...

Now Schneiderman, your point is interesting.

I was just watching the Syd/Lions replay. At half time, they show the highlights of the Swans first-half goals. They're looking at that Hall mark where he 'stole' it from O'Keefe. One of the commentators says to Williams "good to see Hall asserting himself" and Williams says "yeah, well, he's a full forward and it's his job to kick goals....so, get out of the way Ryan".

This creates an interesting point. While O'keefe was in a clear marking position don't you think it's more his job to feed that ball to Hall?

Sure, O'Keefe is a forward, but, as Williams says, he's not a full forward.

Case in point - the second highlight they show is a long ball from Buchanan to the forward 50. Hall breaks on a good lead and out of nowhere comes Malceski, who marks, then goals.

Another case in point - another long ball, Hall breaks and Kennelly shoots in (again, from nowhere) and goals.

Now, while goals are good, these are the highlights - that is, they only show the goals, and in EVERY case, Hall had a clear lead and he was pipped at the post.

Would he have marked it or not? Looks like he could have but that's not the point.

What about the ones they don't show? If Hall marks, he has, by nature, a better chance of goaling. We know this.

So why then are we seeing situations where Hall (and MOL as well) are clearly being blindsided?

Our forward line is way too cluttered.

My point is that the team are not playing their roles. They need to be further back. We need our Scheinders roaming just outside the 50. We need support from our midfielders who need to be in position ready to feed that ball through.

After watching the first half of that game just earlier, I think Schneider's fade-out could, in some way, be symptomatic of this point.

In short, I think Williams' comments were very poignant indeed.

If you have the tape still I strongly recommend you watch it closely and check out the half time highlights. Then post your view.

Yeah I've watched the game a few times and agree. In fact I was quite peed off when I saw a couple of those times Bazza was cut off.

And both the Geelong and Brisbane games demonstrated a lot of poor kicking. And lots of it over the head of both Hall and MOL. At least if it drops short there is still a chance to run onto it and do something. But well over outstretched hands when in front on a lead is really the worst option.

Willo might be right, but lets face it. Our forward's accuracy was short of shocking and I've got a strange feeling that the "small" forwards were probably instructed by the coaching staff to go forward and help kicking some goals. We know why we lost some games this year.
