    Does anyone know

why Ben Mathews is in the team? Surely there is a reason. A serious response would be appreciated - there must be some reason he is in the side. I have not been a serial Mathews basher like some but they are winning me over. What does he give us?

A perfect pass to Nicky D, who missed all and sundry!

Who really cares, they all played fantastic tonight. Now's not the time to be taking pot shots at anyone.

Mathews was a waste of space tonight.

The choice is Matthews and Bevan. Some of Matthews free's against were a bit tough on him IMO.

I'm no matthews fan, but when in space he has a mature head.

I think he was on Waters in the first half, gave away a couple of frees. Not sure who he was running with after Waters went back.

Apparently he is thought to be strong in terms of "Leadership" - I think that's just another way of saying he can't really play but we like him anyway!

Yep that's it. Can't see anyone else in the frame as long as there are no injuries.
                So who do you choose?

I'm not sure, because I do not know, and no one else seems to either, what he does.

The commentaters said at one stage,"Quick hands by Matthews"

I nearly fell off the floor.

Had to be throw then. Poor umpiring.

I think he was on Fletcher for much of the game.

If they are going to play either of the 2 at least Mathews gets into some space and no doubt does play tighter. Clearly he will continue to play for as long as we continue in the finals.

Attempting to meet your request for a serious reply...

He is a negative midfielder. In the past he has been effective at limiting the influence of an opponent. Several years ago, when we were struggling, he also got quite a bit of the ball.

These days he's well past his best, but in the absence of Crouch I think we need him or Bevan in the team.

Tonight he turned it over badly a couple of times but also used it well a couple of times. I can't recall him getting caught in possession, as he so often does now. But the real determinant of his game is how his opponent went. I didn't pick up who it was from the TV - but if it was anyone other than Jones, he did OK.
