    Spriggs - a new twist

Should Longmire go to Saints, would there be any call for Spriggs to be appointed in some sort of official capacity for the Swans? I'm thinking coach of the twos. By all accounts he has been a model clubman and even from the start of 2005 he led the way in improving fitness across the board. A positive role model.

I do know for a fact however that should he be cut Nth Ballarat are looking at him. He'd go well at that level.

I think he could be a walkup start at Carlton. Maybe he just needed some time with less pressure to get his confidence back..just a shame it was with the Swans where he couldn't crack the seniors.

Prior to Longmire taking the reins, who was our 'official' (or permanent) coach of the twos? Was there one?

By the way, there are certainly incentives for marginal players such as Spriggs, once they are out of the AFL system, to stay out of it. There are plenty of cashed up VFL/SANFL/WAFL (maybe even ACT/Qld?) clubs, mostly rich on pokies, who are prepared to pay a pretty penny for 'marquee' players. Cupido, for example, is purportedly on $60,000pa at South Adelaide. (I wouldn't know Spriggs' salary at the Swans, but I'd bet you it's less than $100k when you bear in mind that if it has a match payment component, he's getting zero from that.)

The workload for the player (in terms of training, conditioning, having every box of KFC vetted by the club) is far less than in AFL; it wouldn't even be half as great. So basically you're looking at half the work for vaguely similar money, and almost all of your time during the day M-F is your own to pursue other activities (whether income-supplementing or not). Plenty of people would be perfectly happy with that.

It's no shame that he couldn't break into the current Swans team, even though many of us thought he should have midway through the year.

If I were a struggling Melbourne club such as the Kangaroos or Carlton I would jump at the chance of signing someone with his experience.

I believe his perfect club would be the Bulldogs given their flat out running style of play. Maybe we could arrange a swap with Cooney

Don't be ridiculous. We'd need a first rd draft pick too!

Is there a new new twist arising from Spriggs being named as an emergency? He might be #23 at the club on form, but that's never helped him before. Traditional emergency listers Grundy and Schmidt both missed out.

A half-arsed farewell acknowledgment (a la Schauble), or an olive branch that he might actually still be on the Swans' list in 2007?

Powell was mysteriously named as an emergency in R21 or R22 last year.
