    Kennelly

    Is Kennelly a backman???

I believe he is being wasted in the backline and opposition teams are exploiting his lack of defensive skills. It almost cost us the game against the Eagles (Armstrong dominated against him in the last qtr) and certainly didn't help when we played the Cats.

He does provide a lot of drive and run from the backline, that is the obvious advantage of having him there.

In my opinion he is much better suited to the wing where he can drop back to fill space or create play and kick goals whilst going forward. Far more damaging.

Kennelly is a naturally attacking player and forcing him to play on a HBF is a bit like forcing Goodes to play CHF. Serviceable but won't reach his full potential there.

think you just answered your own question half back is his best position for the team at the moment maybe in a couple of years he will push up the ground he was one of our best against west coast setting up many forward movements

Some of the most creative, attacking and important players to their team's fortunes play off the half back line. Some of them also have moderately decent defensive skills too.

Its ok, the taller of Willos girls will play in the ruck and the slightly shorter one will play as a medium sized running defender. This will free TodGH up to play at FF.

His three errors at the end of the 3rd cost us the cats game....(Even if it was as others have argued not the only problem - I would still say it was the anvil that broke the camels back...)

I would like to see him play on the wing, BUT at the same time, he can be used quite well to exploit a slower, more unaccountable player. He is generally matched up with a stopper anyhow, and generally doesnt get matched up on someone who can rip the game apart (aside from S.Johnson) so at the same time I dont think he is a liability at the back.

I think his headspace was a bit mashed in the last few rounds before he put pen to paper which probably accounted for his sloppier games...

Just about every team in the comp has an attacking, pacy, HBF who plays exactly the role Kennelly does. He did fine with his dashing runs against WCE, and I dont think Armstrong was THAT damaging.

He might be able to play on the wing, but he doesn't have the marking ability compared to, say, Goodes. Anyhow, with the Swans style, he'll more often than not be somewhere in the midfield (or getting help from our midfield in D50), otherwise any perceived defensive deficiencies that he may have is offset by the drive he provides us.

I think he gets us out of the back 50 fast. That's why he's there.
Otherise we suck and get stuck there.
I.e. first 3 rounds this yr.

                  He's a flanker anyway isn't he?
So it's not like he's pinned to the back.

He's our version of Lidsay Gilbee I reckon. Not that great defensively, and can be found out with a pacy and creative forward. Otherwise he is quick, has good disposal, and is willing to run hard off the half-back line.

HBF is probably his most ideal position. I just think he plays better when the game is in front of him and coming at him, rather than need to go with the flight of the ball and having to create something in front of goals. And he just doesn't have enough natural flair (a la Goodes or Judd) to be that effective in the midfield long-term.

Quite obviously he creates run from the backline as everyone has pointed out. That is never in doubt and it would be lovely to have two Kennelly's in the team - one on HBF and the other on the wing.

My point is that moving to the wing would make him a more attacking player, more of a goal kicker and less defensively focussed. In other words it would enable him to better play his natural game and would benefit our team more.

If we are talking about comparisons, I would much rather Kennelly being compared to Peter Matera rather then Lindsay Gilbee.

Hasn't Roos said in the past that he would like to try and groom TK into a more forward role?IMO he is great on the HBF,but he would be pretty equaly good on the wing.
