Surely you don't expect them just take the game so lightly. We know what happened 3 years ago. All that hard work in Perth 10 days ago would go to nothing if they allowed Freo to win. In my opinion our players are much shraper and focused this time than they were in 2003, when they were stumbling at the end of the season and were happy just to make PF.

I reckon the 2nd quarter is going to be crucial if we're going to bury them.

Ever since the disastrous 9-goals-to-2 first quarter in R1 against the Dons, Sydney have really emphasised doing the little things early: contested footy, building up the game plan and the pressure on the opposition, holding onto the footy if the opposition get a run-on. It's like the stock market: you reduce your potential return but minimise your risk.

Sydney, for a team with a very healthy percentage and many big wins for the year, plays relatively close first quarters. Our best first quarter (by points differential) was a relatively moderate 29-point gain (5.2 to 0.3) against Hawthorn back in R9.

Against all of the good teams, there's been little in it at quarter time. After the Essendon debacle, our worst first quarter of the year has been 14 points down at 1/4 time: that's happened 3 times, with two other 11 and 13 point deficits. It points towards Sydney being the masters of cutting its losses when we're getting outplayed.

The second quarter, after the game's settled into a pattern and everyone is over the first quarter rush, will be the time I'll be hoping we can really turn the screws on them. Worked nicely in our most recent final at Homebush (5.3 to 0.0) and also another little game we played last year (3.3 to 0.3).

When blokes go and do their own thing. We know when blokes go out and try to get 30 possessions and blokes are trying to snap goals from impossible angles all day, we won't win a game.
Glad no one told Nick Davis that last year. If Nick hadn't been willing to snap goals from impossible angles THAT day, things would have been very different indeed.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

Wonder if Hall will be satisfied if he spills 12 uncontested chest marks, kicks 1.5, we lose by 4 points but he runs 22 kms and makes 12 tackles. Maybe the reason his "numbers" are down are because of all the "team" things he is doing. As he said in the "pressure" section he is a key forward and he gets paid to kick goals, not run round and round looking to do the team thing.. Maybe if there was someway that each player could be creditied with 1/22 of the goal he would be inclined to kick more.

72 goals so far (3rd career best, and goes to 2nd if he kicks 3 this w/e), 196 marks (2nd career best, needs another 11 to go #1, plus 2nd in the whole league), #1 in the league for contested marks, goalkicking accuracy currently at an all-time best (over two-thirds). And a little thing called the All Australian CHF (and vice-captain). The fact that his tackle count craps all over his previous best (46-32) seems like a bonus on top of that, not a consolation prize.

In many respects for BBBH to say that his stats are "not as good as previous years" is a bit like the Don expressing disappointment that his second innings knock of 150 was "not as good as" his 250 in the first innings.

              He'll still do us.

And all this despite clearly struggling with a back injury for much of the second half of the year.

                  (Can't believe I'm saying this ...)
Agreed. As Captains, Hall (and Barry to a lesser extent) are under an awful amount of pressure. Relieve them of the captaincy, and give it to Goodes (after all, he will be a DUAL Brownlow medalist next monday night, and the club would look foolish not to make him captain). Make Kirk vice. Goodsey has had enough experience now to be able to handle it, and Kirky would make a great co-captain (I don't think he's been around as long as Goodsey, and frankly, IMO Goodsey sounds more articulate in the media).

Leo Barry and Barry Hall are probably two of the best in the business. Let them concentrate on doing what they do best of all ... defending and kicking goals.

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
