    The Future

There is absolutely no doubt that Sydney's achievements in 2005/6 were built on the notion of the team (and devotion to it). That's something to be borne in mind when thinking about any trade. The cost to the Bloods' spirit may well be greater than the loss of the individual's talents... and becomes exponentially greater as you trade more players.

As The Big Cat pithily put it in another thread, "Why break up a team which was 30 seconds from back to back flags."

We saw it with Port in 2005. They were the best team in the comp by a substantial margin in 2004, but once the remaining members of that premiership-winning side had fallen below a critical mass (about 15/16 players remaining) they were suddenly no more than the sum of their parts again. Some of that was injury or retirement that they couldn't control, but they exacerbated those problems by selling off a bit of the farm (or at least having farmworkers walk out).

Our team is a fair bit younger, and so if you believe in this sort of thing has a longer 'window', than Port did. I reckon we should stick with 'em. To look at our immediate future:

    The 'bad' news:
Brett Kirk turns 30 in a few weeks, MOL, Leo Barry and BBBH turn 30 next year. They should all, touch wood, not slow down noticeably in 2007, and in fact barring injury Kirk, Leo and BBBH would all be eyeing at least 2009 with some confidence. It is important that we try to stagger their retirements, as you can't rip that level of experience and leadership out of a team in a single season and remain competitive. Of course, we lose Kennelly at end 2009 as well.

    The good news:
Apart from the above, Ben Mathews and Jared Crouch (both 30 in 2008), the entire Sydney squad was born in the 1980s. They are all, at worst, mid-career. That's a lot of good players with a lot of years left in 'em: 16 out of the 22 who played yesterday (excluding Tadhg). If this group stays together, and it keeps its intensity and cameraderie, there's no reason why it can't keep giving the premiership a shake while we slowly and incrementally develop, draft and occasionally trade players to fill the boots of BBBH, MOL and Leapin' Leo through the period 2008-10.

We don't need to panic, and we know that trading in one great player doesn't bring premierships. Getting the best out of 22 players, across a range of roles and with a range of levels of talent, all playing for each other, does.

I'm not saying: don't trade. I'm just saying: don't sell off, piece by piece, the things that have made this team the first Swans side to make back-to-back GFs for over 70 years.

I have to admit that one of my first thoughts after the game is that we would be a while to return for a grand final.....

But, the vast majority of our team are quite young. Micky we will certainly miss (and even more than people think in my opinion) and of course the colonel in the centre - but we still do have the nucleous of a great team.

McVeigh did some excellent stuff on g.f. day and through the year, the ca non is still young and is an essential cog, schneiderman is still young, the eski is still effectively a first year player, teddy is still young, davis as we have known for a number of years could do anything, goodes is in his prime, the fridge is in his prime (rok, aka whitegoodes)

Conan (doyle) hasnt played that much footy to be exposed to the bash and crash for a mid 20's player....

so maybe it isnt all doom and gloom....

it will either motivate them a hell of a lot or sink them down in to a pile of misery
Theres not much left to say

Why are you talking as if we will be without Magic and Kirk? Our best chance of another one is in the next couple of years. These two should still be able to play a big part in that, certainly next year. After that, you'd have to think the current window will close, unless something unexpected happens (eg Grundy becomes the next Fev or Gibbs falls to no 15 in the draft!)

We're as well placed in 2007 as we were in 2006, possibly better so as the younger players will have gained even more experience. Nevertheless, making a grand final, most particularly in a very even competition, is still a major effort, so even if we're better placed it's still a challenge. I would hope we can give it a fair crack in 2007 and/or 2008 though. After that I would think we will drop down a bit as we'll need to replace a few players and from there it depends on list management.

I think that is the key. Having reached two in two years it is easy to be fooled into the belief that it's not too hard.

We need to improve just to stay the same.

We will be contenders for the next two years at least.

Our main rivals will be West Coast and maybe Adelaide if they can solve their ruck problems.

Freo are on the up but still inexperienced when it comes to finals and the Bulldogs are talented but not a hardened finals side.

              St Kilda are St Kilda.

No reason why 2007 won't be Weagles vs Swans again.

(Not sure if I have the nerves to watch it though)

There are actually plenty of reasons.

micky has been nursed through the last 3-4 seasons....I'm pretty sure his groin was playing up in the grand final too....I would love to see him go on, but I dont think you can depend on his output long term.

The colonel plays a tough and rough brand of footy. I think he slowed down a tad this year, and again, his output may drop off further next year. On the plus side, he didnt come into footy as a youngster so he perhaps has a few more years than what we think - is also renowned for preparation so I could be wrong.

But for mine, those are the two real barometres for our team.

I wonder how long we can be competitive with everybody playing at their peak?

This concerns me but the coach knows the list better than us and in the next week, we'll find out whio is worth keeping.

The dogs and saints will be much better next year especially when you have Longmire coaching the saints, he will know every Swans weakness and strength. It will be even harder to beat them.

Everitt would be an asset and I hope they recruit his brother as well.
In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.

I think it's perfect feasible that it could happen again next year and/or the year after. However, we also need to remember how tough it is just to make the grand final.
