    Goldspink

Don't know if this has been discussed here before (apologies if it has), but I would like to make comment on the umpiring of Darren Goldspink.

Although I generally had no complaints about the umpiring, I did take exception to the insistence of Goldspink to line up the mark of Barry Hall in the second (?) quarter after he had played on and kicked a goal. It smacked of arrogance from an umpire determined to put his own stamp on the game.

Goldspink failed in the most basic duty of checking whether an advantage had been gained before bringing play back, costing the swans an important goal.

I am sick to death of his grandstanding antics!!!!!

MMM commentators were scathing about him trying to be the centre of attention.

The Barry Hall ruling was a joke. As far as I could tell, Hall went to play on, and got himself into a bit of bother. He eventually kicked it (and it sailed through) but Goldy reset the mark. Can someone explain it? If he ran off the line, it should be play on. I could see no reason for him to be called back except that the defender seemed confused because as soon as Bazza played on, he seemed to regret it.

Usually the only time players are called back to stand in line with the mark is when a free-kick is awarded and they attempt to play on from a point not in line with where the free was awarded. If they take a mark and move off the line, it's play-on, yes?

He took a mark, played on and kicked a goal, it's as simple as that. Goldspink should've known better. When Spink fell to the ground in the last quarter I laughed so hard...
I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!! :adore

Actually the ball was touched on the line before it went through, I was sitting in the cheersquad at that end & the goal umpire signalled it was touched so ethier way it was better that hall got his kick again.
Forget about Hall, it's all about Bradshaw

I didn't because we had a run on at that stage and it robbed us of momentum. It really @@@@@@ me off.

I don't think the umpiring favoured either team overall, but it was inconsistent and of poor quality.

On the other hand, the umpiring in last year's grand final was exceptionl
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

I had no complaints with the umpiring. They let the play go, and while both teams got their fair share of dodgy calls, I thought it was a fairly good performance from the umpires.

That's fair enough then - I missed the umps signal. I'd still like to know what Goldspink's reasoning was to bring it back.

Overall the umpiring was okay. I didn't think it had a huge impact on the game. I think we had 3 free kicks inside our forward 50 in the first half. Shame we couldn't convert (Jude, Mickey and Bazza, I'm looking at you).

Apparantly, he'd blown time-off and hadn't blown time-on - The only thing to do there was to reset the mark.

Nothin showed the ineptness of this excuse of an umpire more than in the 3rd term. Hall had been riden into the ground and it was an obvious free for in the back, any umpire would make that decision... not our Goldy!! He was the ump in control, there was no way he was blind sighted, he saw it side on. I looked to him immediately to see why it hadnt been paid to see him folding his arms about to give holding the ball!!
If it was for Brett Allen running in from a distant position to make the call, GOldy would have struck.
Of course, Baz missed the sitter.

Goldspink is a show pony - but he has changed from my most-hated umpire to one I'd prefer to have in bigger games. I just wish someone would tell him that it's not about him.
