    Swans dearly departed list

    The list goes under the magnifying list this week. I'm sure players don't have to be de-listed this week but the names will be circled.
    Who will be gone from the list this year.

    My lists is:

    1. Willow - retired;
    2. Chambers - delisted;
    3. Spriggs - delisted;
    4. Matthew Davis - delisted
    5. Simon Pilllips - delisted and back to rookie list
    6. Josh Willoughby - delisted or traded.
    7. Earl Shaw or Ericksen - delisted. One may go.

    Other players may go depending on trades but as the other thread showed, the guessing is never ending.
    In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.

    I just heard on Fox Sports that Fossie is keen to return home to Adelaide. Former Swan Scott Stevens would be very handy at CHB.

        Scott Stevens? No Thanks. Would rather Ken McGregor.

            All he means is that he will be put back on the rookie list which officially he is still on.

                That surprises me a bit. He's played some solid football this year - including on Saturday - and his place in the top 22 of one of the current best 3 or 4 sides in the league seems pretty secure. He's a bit too old to be homesick, and it beats me why anyone would want to go back to Adelaide to live, of all places.

                  This rumour came up last year but nothing really happened. If Adelaide give us a draft pick to enable us to secure Tarrant, Kelly and Everitt, i'll be a happy chappy.

                    I dont believe it. No one who has left Adelaide and moved to Sydney is 'keen' to return back to Adelaide to live. Why would they be?

                      They don't call it the silly season for nothing.

                      Fossie recently got married - is his wife a Sydney or Adelaide gal??

                        If they are going to let that many go, I reckon Phillips will get promoted to the senior list permanently. I don't think any other rookies will get promoted this season.

                          My reasoning is that on average about 6 to 7 players will go each year regardless of how they leave. Last year 9 players left.

                          So I'm confident of the above as being the most likely to go.

                            Last year 9 left, most were more experienced players retiring or looking for further opportunities. The year before only 3 left (not counting Heath James who was redrafted). So it really depends on the circumstances where you cant' throw a blanket statement that 6 or 7 will go. All we know is that a minimum of 3 have to go.

                            Anyway, that's besides my point which was if you believe that 6 or 7 are going to go, wouldn't there be a greater probability that Phillips will be promoted onto the senior list.

                            If Fosdike does get traded, I wonder if Spriggs will stay because he could slot straight into Fossie's current role off the bench.

                              If you go back over the years, there's an average turnover of around 5 or 6 a year (38 players on list, average time on list perhaps 6-7 years). But that's very much an average, and some years there'll be more, some fewer.

                              Remember, it's about moving people off the 38 person 'senior list'. There are also the (currently empty) veteran's list (for so-called 'outside veterans') and the very crowded rookie list. Keeping or putting people on those two lists costs us nothing but cash.

                              Unless the recruiting team discovers a remarkable smokey to take with our 4th pick (which no-one else knows about), I can't see us using a 4th pick. (We're not desperately short on youth. So why boot out an extra player to use pick 60-something on a 18yo when the player you'd be booting off our list is a better prospect, and more mature as well?) So we only need to clear out 3 names from the list.

                              Now let's see how many we can get rid of (or have already got rid of) without cutting terribly deep:
                              Paul Williams: already gone.
                              Matt Davis: delist.
                              David Spriggs: delist.
                              Paul Chambers: delist/ already left.
                              Micky O'Loughlin: Eligible for veteran's list (i.e. to be removed from senior list of 38) as he turns 30 in 2007 and has been with club at least 10 years.
                              Leo Barry: Eligible for veteran's list. Also turning 30 in 2007 and >10 years with Sydney. Unless they've just changed the rules without telling me, teams can have a maximum of 2 veterans (affecting only the size of the rookie list).

                              That's 6. That is to say, if Sydney delists what is seen to be 'the minimum' of 2 active players + Chambers, and takes advantage of the option to put both MOL and Leo Barry on the outside veteran's list (i.e. not counted in the 38), it could promote 2 rookies (possibly inc Phillips), trade in a player (without sending anyone away), and still take its regulation 3 draft picks.

                              The only reason I can think of why we would consider not adding MOL and Leo to the outside veteran's list, is if we traded someone in on an excessive salary, and were forced to keep one of them as an 'inside veteran' to take advantage of the fact that inside veterans' salaries only count 50% towards the salary cap. (Outside veterans still count fully towards the salary cap; that's the trade-off.)

                              If the club forms the view that little Willo and Ericksen (for example) have no future and will never make it, that's one thing. But the view that we have to chop them to make mandatory space on our list, is wrong.
