    Elevations/Delistings/Trading

Back from a weeks internet isolation at beautiful Lake Tabourie. (it took the entire week to recover from the Grannie mind) None of the threads (titles at least) in the last week have speculated on list changes, apart from the possibility of Spida and Tarrant.

    So what will happen.

Delistings: Davis, Spriggs, Willoughby, Chambers ? any other takers?
Elevations: ?Flea? Phillips, at least another year on the rookie list for Keiren Jack. In all honesty, all our rookies showed something in the ressies this year.

I?m very encouraged that Roos has indicated that we?ll not pay over the odds for Spida, and will let him go to the PSD if the Hawks continue to be unrealistic. The trading wild card to me is Polak, unfulfilled talent with many more years in him than Tarrant. If our crew assess that he?s redeemable, I would not rule out a late push for him.

History over the last couple of years has said we trade players for picks. Unless Ricky sees real gold this time around don?t be surprised if the same thing happens again.

Have our list changes been posted in the last week and I have missed them?

I don't think we'll delist beyond Williams (retire), Chambers (hack), and Matt Davis.

With MOL moving to the veteran's list we hardly need to delist anyone unless some of our youngsters have requested trades in order to get opportunities elsewhere (Roos has said no one is desperate to move, but some will consider for the right club).

I'd rather keep Spriggs on the senior list and not promote Philips.

Unless of course Spriggs requests a trade, which is likely given we didn't give him a chance this year.

Philips can get elevated again if in the event that someone has a LTI.

Out: Willo (Retire), O'Loughlin (Vets list), Barry (Vets list if eligible), M. Davis & P. Chambers (delist), Garubba (Delist. Rookie)

I reckon that's probably on the money.

I can see value in keeping Spriggs around - he should have played a few games this year - but I suspect he won't be.

I know many here think Willoughby should stay but I don't see it. In three years, how many times has he been named as emergency even? I think he's a decent chance to be picked up as a rookie by another club but I don't think he'll be kept on our list.

The other group that should come under discussion is the young rucks. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of Erickson or Shaw go - maybe in a low value trade to someone like Carlton. Will probably depend on whether they keep Rowe around. He shouldered much of the reserves ruck work during the year and did it very competently. His main problem is that he's an inch or so too short to play full-time ruck at senior level.

I know Erickson was taken as a long term project but it's hard to see when the project might end. He had injuries this year, which didn't help, but he still looks like he doesn't like the physical stuff much. And you can't ruck at AFL level if you're not willing to crash into other bodies. His ground level work is pretty good for someone his size but he can't make a career out of that.

In terms of rookies, I expect Phillips and Simpkin will get another year in some shape or form. I really hope that Rowe, Barlow and Jack do too. The rest have all shown something but suspect they'll probably be chopped.

Would be sad to see Erickson or Shaw go but it seems like there is probably only 2 spots on the list for them and Rowe.

Even though I could see the value of Spriggs being on the list surely he would have goten at least one game in the last 18 months if he was considered to have a future at all...

What's the deal with Chambers? Does he have to retire, does he still stay on our list?

I nearly put Erickson in my list of delistings too. He's had three years now, and I think this year both Shaw and Rowe performed better.

I haven't seen Spriggs play since his last time in the seniors. He's fast - but is he a better player now - and does he show more heart these days?

(Ideally, I'd like him to have turned into Kerr.)

Inconsistent players tend to consistently baulk at contractual arrangements. Therefore we will see a glut of inconsistent players being offered in this draft. The big question is......what do you offer to gain a liability?

If you've got a magic wand you should turn him into Judd

What do you mean by heart? I've never seen him shirk a contest, particuarly admirable/stupid when he is willing to put his head over the ball when 100 points up in the 4th quarter with a truck driver 5 times his size running at him.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

In seniors he was generally around the edge of the action. That may have been his assigned task but there were times when I wished he'd go in harder (and many more when I wished he'd do the right thing when he got it). It sounds like he is much more in and under over the past 18 months. Good.

There are some players like Moore, Spriggs, Vogels, Phillips when it'd be great to know what they have been told in private about where they stand. I bet they know if they have a future at the club or not - I just don't see Roos telling them the "let's wait and see" PR blurb that he tells the media - and us.

Of course they're better informed. It's their future. But being told 'we're considering putting you up for trade if the right deal is struck and you're prepared to go' is different from actually going. Fossie was shopped around, at least to Adelaide clubs (possibly at his own initiative), without generating sufficient interest a couple of years back. I for one am very happy we kept him; if you were to allocate combined points for performances in the two GFs for the 18 players who played both, he'd probably be top of the pile.

Successful negotiations often require keeping your cards close to your chest. A particularly interesting one is Luke Vogels. There was a story in his hometown newspaper a month or two back (link elsewhere on this site) where he said that he'd been told that he was a required player and was talking with the club about a 2-year deal. Still nothing signed off that we know of. He can't quite crack the league squad regularly, but performs creditably when he does, and has attributes that lesser clubs would like; so would be on my short-price list for a player trade if Sydney are to make one.
