    Longmire's future

Two articles in today's papers about where the future may lie for Longmire.

The Age reports the creation of a "super assistant" role within the Swans, not created specifically for Longmire but earmarked for him if he wants it.

While the Hun reports that the Cats are keen to lure him down to Geelong as 2IC for Bomber.

Let's hope he stays. To lose all three assistant coaches in one fell swoop would be very disappointing.

Also interesting to see Lyon comment that he will try to introduce the same level of player empowerment at St Kilda that the Swans have achieved. I guess that some of the "secrets" of the medical / conditioning staff will also start to get spread around.

Let's hope Horse stays in Sydney. It would be a major blow to lose all three assistants.

Interesting that Horse would become midfield coach. I wonder if Roosy is trying to change Lynch's mind about coaching this year given the recent departures.

That new role makes a lot of sense. I'm not a Personnel person but I see the devastation that competitive people go through when they don't get a job. Some really drop their bundle. This sounds very sensible and not condescending.

From what I know of the medical system it was a 3 year project just to get it to where it was last year.

It relies upon individual assessment after each training session and match to build history which can then be used to hopefully limit injuries and have the players in the peak physical condition.

While Lyon will be able to employ the system it will be a while before they maybe see the fruits of their labour.

Poor judgments are made in haste, Horse. Plus it's early ripe, early rotten in the coaching caper. It's a marathon, not a sprint. And as many other cliches as I can squeeze in.

Seriously, if he wants to remain working in a footy-related coaching role in 2007, I can't imagine what better job he could have than the one he's being offered at Sydney.

The Geelong gig is a lose/lose, just like Freo was and is for Mark Harvey. When you arrive as the well-credentialled 2IC to a beleagured coach, if the team turns around and does well, the senior coach gets the credit not you, and eventually you find yourself wondering 'how long could I be sitting here?' If the club keeps going badly, the coach gets sacked and you get the main job, you're viewed as the rat in the ranks who was only put there to knife your superior, and you start the job in a divided club.

Wasn't favourite to succeed Eade at the time he was appointed assistant coach. Depending on who's writing the history, wasn't even necessarily favourite to get the permanent gig after Eade's sacking. Whereas Harvey is/was unbackable favourite at Freo, and Horse would be the same in Geelong.

Plus Sydney, even in its 2002 incarnation, is/was a relatively agenda-free and above-board place compared with the generations-old internicine warfare at most Victorian AFL clubs. They make the Sicilian Mafia look like the Bindi Irwin Hair-Crimping Fanclub.

I guess if they dangle the carrot that he gets the top job when Roos finishes in 2010 (or is it 09?) this may make him hungrier to succeed, knowing what is ahead of him in a few years time, he can work on what he has, but also have alternative strategies(in the Neil Craig type of style) for the future. Well ya can only hope.

3 years is a long time. I hope the club waits until 2009 to decide who replaces Roos.

It would be good it Longmire left, IMO, and went and worked at another club and gained different experiences before being considered as Roos replacement when the time comes.

Also - who knows who will be the gun coach then? Maybe we will want Rossy Lyon back.
