Roos - sucks to work with?

Does Jonas and Lyon jumping ship from a club that has made two consecutive Grand Finals make anyone else wonder if there's something imperfect about the coaches' box? It'll be interesting to see if Roos without his Premiership winning Assistants performs better than Blight at St Kilda without being carried by Neil Craig.

How does Roos respond when asked if he personally has any shortcomings as a coach:

Q: Every player at some stage has a bad game. Does Paul Roos ever coach a bad game?

A: There's always games where afterwards you wished you did things differently and a little bit better. There's no question there's been times this season as a coaching group we've been a little bit disappointed in our performance.

I don't really think anything in that quote, or the article, suggests that Roos is difficult to work with per se. I read it as him being honest, it's not unreasonable for a coach to be disappointed in his performance in any given game.

Interesting that he jokes that he will probably leave "when the players get sick of me", talking about coaches going stale. He obviously hasn't forgotten how he came to get the job after Eade left.

I've always said at that six or seven-year mark with the same coach and group of players it becomes a pretty testing time unless you have had a good degree of success.

He seemed pretty tight-lipped on the team's goals beyond his original three-year plan though. Don't know how much to read into that, came across as if he doesn't really have any new ideas. It's also a Tim Morrissey article, and I know some on here don't exactly rate his work.

Even so, I don't see anything unusual about that. From the bit Sanecow quoted, it's pretty normal, in just about any career, to look back and wish you did a few things better. I just took it as an admission that the coaching group, himself included, isn't perfect, and that even they make mistakes.

Why would he need any new ideas as yet? they seem to be working pretty well, and let's remember Pagan's Paddock worked for the best part of a decade lol. We have Hall's Hall

That's because the game plan has continued to evolve since Roos took over. We had the running, attacking game in 2003, then teams figured us out and there were the dour grinds of 2004-2005. This year has been a bit different, but in such an even competition, you really have to keep improving just to hold your ground.

No doubt things should be tweaked and adjusted now n then, but i wouldn't imagine he'd have to come up with anything too drastic. The man transformed our team from also-rans to a premiership force in a matter of 2 years, let's not jump on him after falling 2 points short of another flag.

Or maybe loss in GF finally caused some rifts between coaching staff resulting in latest changes to AC positions. Read it as you will, but somebody wasn't happy with our performance in GF and (probably) demanded some changes in the way we are playing. I hope it will be for the better in 2007.

As the head coach, nudging criticism toward the assistant coaches ... colleagues they may be, but a manager deflecting blame on his underlings ?? Don't think there is a workplace in existence (anywhere in the world) where that doesn't happen.

I think it would be hard to say that Roos has not worked hard to empower those under him - the players, the leadership group, the assistant coaches, the new Super AC role offered to Horse, etc. So it's unlikely that he's not going to say that coaching is done as a collective.

If the question had been "do you accept that you are the best coach in the AFL" that Roos would have answered "It was me, all me. Those other guys did nothing"? If you find that approach better, it's easy to find other teams where that is the way coaching is done.

If the coaches box is imperfect, yet gets us to 3 prelims, 2 GFs and 1 flag in 4 years, imperfect sits fine with me.
