Roos - sucks to work with?

It's funny reading through this thread you can tell which people are in management positions and who aren't (and those that don't care)....

I think Roos will be OK - the success could be attributed to the coaching structure, with the coaches broken and responsible for their particular sections. The interesting thing will be if this new position upsets the equilibrium...and the filling of existing roles.

And another thing, why is it that some consider Roos to be above any criticism at all? Surely when 2 assistant coaches go and another tried very hard to go this thread raises a legitimate question. Especially when this has to be disruptive to the club. If being a real fan means not being allowed to question Roos, criticise Kirk or go out in the sun without a member's cap, I'm happy to stay on tha bandwagon.

Did you ever think the assistant coaches just wanted to take the chances given to them? everyone has higher ambitions and they would be silly not to look at positions elsewhere, and i never said Roos was above any critisism, but i do think people jump on his back awfully fast, which isn't really supportive in my opinion, but that's just me

based on the misguided assumption "that ac's move because the senior coach sucks".there would be no ac's in the system,just stroppy senior coaches.

if ac's didn't have aspirations to a senior position,most clubs would have no coach or one who is 70 yrs old.

recent ac's promoted....lyon.worsfold.connolly.craig.roos.laid ley.n daniher.

imho i would rather have a club where EVERYONE has aspirations in preference to people in the comfort zone.

That wouldn't fly in a lot of backward "greed is good" workplaces which typify Australian business...you know the ones where it's much more important to be SEEN to be working long hours than to actually get the job done.

It's called empowerment...ie if I make a mistake you are responsible, if you make a mistake I am responsible. Teamwork etc, etc, etc.

It should apply on the field as well in that when a fellow player makes an error the question is "what could I have done to have prevented that and what can I do to have it not happen again?"

Sometimes the best thing I can do is say "'you owe us" to fire up Nick davis, or sometimes the best thing I can do is take a one handed mark in the defensive fifty and get the most contested ball in a grand final even though I'm not supposed to have the talent. (I was channelling Brett Kirk there for a moment).

The theory is that if you remove blame and making other people (and yourself) wrong all the time you can actually remain clearheaded and do the most constructive thing necessary.

To answer the original question the truth is the opposite...Roosey has so empowered and taught his pupils that they are now the most sought after non head coaches in the game, and they also have the self confidence to do what is best for their careers and their families instead of sticking around for reasons of "loyalty".

If you are giving all you have got during the season then there is no way that you "owe" the club anything for next season...each pre season should start with a clean slate.

Manager should always take responsibility for his subordinates actions. Higher position doesn't come only with quirks but also responsibilities. The higher you go the lower you'll fall.

Yes, but you're missing the point. What if those lower down took responsibilty for how the senior manager performs? What if you said (as a worker) "His mistakes are my mistakes, his mistakes are as much my responsibilty as his"?

I believe that this is the model that Roosey is working on.

There is one simple fact, it works.

I spoke to some people involved in the club soon after Roos replaced Eade and the common view was that Eade talked big but lacked the courage to make big decisions. Roos on the other hand didn't talk big but was not afraid to make the big calls and be completely ruthless when he has to be. That may give an insight to his management style. In terms of how that impacts on the ACs, I think people are seeing issues that aren't there. Lyon and Jonas are leaving for the right reasons. That's it. There may have been some fur flying after the GF on why things happened the way they did and who takes responsibility for that, but so what? That happens after every final game of the year at every club except the premiers.
