    Ruck division cost

Post Eade we've had to completely rebuild our ruck division.

So far we've morgaged the future to do so:

    Jolly: 1st round pick
    Chambers: 2nd round pick
    Everitt: 2nd round pick

This is the hidden cost of ignoring the ruck post Stafford.

      haha.......stafford.......

with him in the ruck we could afford to ignore it because you already knew which way the ball would head.

What a useless tramp he was.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH MMG we all know you miss the days of Stafford in the red and white spending more time than not butt in the air bending over in front of his opposing man (well any man really)

                Draft schmaft.

I love these threads that look to pick the eyes out of the pros and cons of our draft/trading history. Jolly was worth the 1st round. Chambers dud fair enough. Everitt worth pick 33 IMHO Craig bolton for nothing in the PS draft now All Aust. Nick daffy dud in but had to be taken to secure Hall.

Fact remains that Swans have been acknowedlged as a team that has succeeded without having to rebuild and secure early picks.

Jolly, Williams, Hall, Davis all drafted in exchange for picks + C. Bolton for nothing.

                Swings and roundabouts.

If the price post-Stafford is 3 prelims in 4 years, 2 GFs, and 1 flag more of the same I say

Trading for a premier ruck division with Chambers the only failure....no problem with trading. Jolly helped deliver the 2005 flag as a number two, that is what he is and 2007 is looking good now!

He was certainly number twos in the 2006 Grand Final.

But his other delivery that week was excellent.

                        1. Have no idea how picking up a 23-year-old match-ready ruckman from whom we can expect 7 or 8 years' service counts as 'mortgaging the future'. Everyone grows old eventually (except Robert Harvey).
                        2. I don't think that drafting ruckmen in 2003 and 2004 (rookie, promoted in 2005) counts as 'ignoring the ruck'. It's just that young ruckmen notoriously take years before they're ready for AFL league footy. That's why the Jolly trade was such good value (and the Chambers trade was, if he'd turned out to be tolerable, worth a shot).

Relative to the number of ruckmen you can expect to see on a club's list, Sydney have if anything been over-active in getting ruckmen to the harbour city over the last 5 years.
