    Delistings - Who?

Now that trading week is over, it's time to concentrate on who will be delisted.

    According to BigFooty Sydney has:

    Sydney:
    IN: P Everitt (Haw)
    OUT: Pick 33

    Picks: 15, 49, 65, 81
    .

They will have to pick at least 3 players.

I also read on BigFooty that Jon Simpkins had been upgraded to the list for next year. Anyone else heard this? Simon Phillips was promoted too during the year wasn't he?

Currently we have Willo retired, Chambers will be delisted. That means another 2 or 3 will have to go.

    I'm guessing:

    1. Spriggs;
    2. Smoky Davis;
    3. Shaw or Eriksen?

I'm not sure who will be veteran listed.

I don't get this. Is Spriggs the best player we have that isn't in the senior team. That seems to be his standing in the Magoos. If so, why are we likely to trade him?

The change of Horse's role suggests that we are planning on doing more with the kids in the lead up to, and during the early part of the season. We are always accused of lacking depth and getting by through a lack of injury. This may be set to change - as it has for our ruck stocks.

So do we want Spriggs or not?

First, we can't trade him now. He stays or gets delisted. Second, Swans have delisted other players in Spriggs situation because he's not going to get any better and the kids under him will.

I hope both bean poles stay.

Leo and MOL will head to the veterans list.

My money would be on Davis and Erikson to be delisted.

Sounds like our youngsters will be getting some intensive tuition over the pre season.

Sydney getting Spida for a deal involving only picks, not players, is bad news for existing fringe players. Not just for the obvious reason (i.e. we're plus one player)-- for salary cap reasons.

Sydney conceded a day or two ago that they would have problems fitting Spida in under the cap at his asking price (presuming they weren't foxing, and there's no reason why they would be).

Offloading low-paying, low-profile youngsters won't relieve those salary cap pressures-- you have to pay your new draftees award minimums anyway. Delisting David Spriggs (or rehiring him on a substantially reduced contract, which for salary cap purposes amounts to the same thing), and somehow cancelling Paul Chambers' contract if it's possible to do so, won't be enough, either.

There's only one way I can see that Sydney can relieve them-- list MOL and Leo Barry as 'inside veterans'.

Benefit: Their salaries only count half towards the cap. Half of Leo's plus half of MOL's salary would be near enough to bang-on Spida's salary.
Detriment: They are still counted inside the senior list of 38. In effect, that's two additional senior list places that we could have had, that we won't have.

Presuming always that Sydney will utilise 3 picks only (and the fact that our 3rd pick is #65 makes that a virtual certainty):
Starting point of minus 4 (Williams, Chambers, Matt Davis, Spriggs) plus one (Everitt). (Phillips automatically reverts to the rookie list once his 'rookie promotion' expires-- he doesn't need to be 'senior delisted'.) That puts us 3 down on our start of 2006 list-- the minimum number.

So then, one of little Willo or Ericksen (presuming they're the next 2 at the bottom of the pile) will need to be delisted if we are going to promote Phillips (or Simpkin or another rookie). They can only both survive if no rookies are promoted.

Something that Sydney has done before, and could easily do again, is to delist one of Ericksen or little Willo (to make space for a promoted rookie), roll the dice that all other clubs have their hearts set on other players, and pick him up again with our last pick.

Simpkin will be on senior list. Was offered a spot last week in his end of season interview with Roosy. Not officially announced as yet.

Roos may want Spriggs to stay so it's up to Spriggsy if he wants to try his luck elsewhere me thinks.

I reckon we will delist 4

                  1. Smokey Davis
                  2. Torture (Retirement or compromise payout on the 3 year deal)
                  3. Spriggs
                  4. Ericksen

Would be a tough call on Ericksen but with Spida here it may be game over for him.

Willoughby is on the cusp of delistment but i hope they keep him and give him an opportunity next year cause i reckon he can seriously play.

Simpkin definate for promotion to the senior with Phillips looking at a spot too. Rowe is 3rd in line for promotion me thinks.

                    This is what I've heard.

                    Also - Chambers delisted himself

Why isn't Everitt regarded as a veteran?

Veterans are defined as players on a single club list for 10 years. If Spida had gone back to St Kilda he would hav ebeen a veteran there.

The delistings will be Smokey Davis, David Spriggs, and Paul Chambers will probably retire. Ericksen will not be delisted. You rarely delist a ruckman.
