    Traditional rival....

As we are discussing the draw, who is our traditional rival??

Are we developing a new rivalry with the wet toaste weagles???

Will we ever have a traditional rival??? Or are we destined to remain without rival..

North Melbourne Bushrats *were* the "traditional" rival weren't they??
Who decided Brisvegas? I hate Brisvegas.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

As much as I'd love to see the budgies become our traditional rival, they can keep playing with the Quokkers.

I honestly think (read: earnestly hope) we'll pull away from the budgies this year and our games will be far more one-sided ... our way. In a few years time, I think the point will probably be moot.

I STILL wanna know why Brisvegas is our rival. If it's got anything to do with thugby league state of origin, that's a crock!! This is AFL, not league.

Like I said.. it's purely because we don't have a revival.. neither do they... we're both north of Melbourne.... wha la.. One instant rivalry!

Wha la ... the forgotton rivalry!!
No-one cares about the Sydney/Brisvegas rivalry game ... not even Sydney or Brisvegas.
It's all about four points. Not get down and dirty "rivalry".

If we are talking about who we play in the Rivalry Round it will probably remain Brisbane.

After the logical rivals are set up, e.g. Freo-WC, Port-Crows etc, it seems a little like its Sydney and Brisbane left over at the end.

But its probably a bit more than that though - the two non-Victorian teams north of Victoria. The history of the clubs, i.e. South Melbourna and Fitzroy who both used to play at opposite ends of the Albert Park, Brisbane is ex Fitzroy...Roosey is ex-Fitzroy etc

Personally I'd prefer Melbourne, so that every second year the rivalry round game could be played in Melbourne (mind you we are going to be playing the Melbourne home game in Canberra next year, so we have lost that game here...which is a gripe for me as I reckon we need to play MCG games)

Our historical rival was StKilda. South Melbourne and StKilda used to play for the Lakeside Cup

"Traditional" rivalry would have to be St Kilda.

The Brisbane rivalry makes sense but it is more a rivalry out of convenience than anything else.

West Coast is a modern day rivalry.

You got it both right and wrong in the same paragraph. It is about the rivalry that existed between the clubs when they were at the other end of the Lake to us. We were both usually around the middle to bottom of the ladder. It has npthing to do with Roos having played at Fitzroy though.

Rivals, rivals well as has been said we did use to play St Kilda for the Lakeside Cup when they played their home games at the Junction Oval up until 1966 (ground was at the other side of Albert Part) so they are more our tradition rivals.

Carlton are up there mainly because of two events, the 1945 Bloodbath Grand Final and the time in 1992 when they tried to put us out of business and in turn play all their "away" games in Sydney in our place. So we have as much reason to hate them as any other club.

Then there is of course Brisbane and the AFL's attempt to get a rivally started over the whole NSW/QLD thing. Problem is I really can't remember hating Fitzroy (other than for the fact my @@@@head brother supports them but thats a different matter altogether) and them hating us, even after Roosy left them for us.

There is of course Essendon, Port Adelaide and Collingwood who people here hate for different reasons but the club itself doesn't really have a rivally with those clubs so to speak, except that we know Sheedy dislikes us, Port haven't got over the fact we beat them in the final in 03 and Collingwood are just Collingwood (and there was the string of GF's we played them in the 30's and lost)

That finally brings me to West Coast. Hands up who thinks after the last three years of finals matches that this is now a rivally for the ages??? I think so.
                        Once was, now elsewhere

The poll asks for our Traditional Rival. You cannot get more traditional then the Fitzroy Lions. The very reason we play Brisbane in rivalry round is not the claim that "we have no one else" but the fact that these two sides have one of the oldest rivalries in the VFL that rivals Essendon and Collingwood or Carlton and Melbourne. The adjoining teams had bitter feuds throughout their years and when South moved to Sydney the animosity wasn't dimmed, nor when Fitzroy merged with Brisbane. The Lions and the Swans, a real rivalry. I'm suprised and dismayed more don't know about this.

Granted we are building a great new rival with WCE, but that is hardly a "Traditional" rival. It takes a lot more time and a lot more contests to forge that. People tried to trump up North as our rival. Look what happened to that when the contests started lacking. No one cared. If the rivalry between Sydney and WCE is still alive in 25 years THEN it's a fair dinkum rivalry. Until then its just a vicious contest.

Syadney, as Sydeny not South, were so crap for so many of their first 15 years that they did not develop a rivalry with anyone. Rivalry round is a good idea, just that some clubs - mainly us and Brisbane - miss out. No great loss. To suggest that WCE would be a good match up is ridiculous IMO. Ask the people of Perth. And anyway, who would be a better mtch for Freo?
