And anyway, who would be a better mtch for Freo?
I was living in Brisbane during much of the Lions reign. The Swans beat them often enough to @@@@ the Lions supporters off and they saw us as a rival.

It's the QLD vs NSW think as well. It's funny how your attitude to someone can change when they wear a bit of Maroon. I hate Queenslanders.

No real rivalry between us and Brisbane. I'd rather play St Kilda. Brisbane could play North as Qld rivals.

            I agree.

I think the Brisbane/Kangas thing should be the Rivalry round from next year. Kangas are the part time neighbours now.

I would love to play St. Kilda in Rivalry round.

I agree with the statement that WCE are the modern day rivals, but the rivalry will begin for the Swans when the second team is set up in Sydney.

Undoubtedly a belief held by Melbourne based swans supporters. Try living in Sydney. St Kilda....why not Geelong?

Living in Sydney is no reason not to appreciate the club's history. Our rivalry with St Kilda over the lakeside premiership is a great reason to bring the clubs together in rivalry round. The fact that they knocked us out of the finals in 2004 and we knocked them out in 2005 doesn't hurt either.

Lots of actual and potential rivalry round matchups have their origins in past decades:
Carlton v Richmond from the 70s
Essendon v Hawthorn from the 80s
Collingwood v Melbourne from the 50s

AFAIK we have no particular historical or modern-day rivalry with Geelong.

As mentioned before the Saints were the traditional rivals for the club because it really was a derby. I noticed after the Prelim in 2005 that the genuine hate many Saints fans had for Sydney boiled to the surface and it was an eye opener.

While there were rivalries based on GF's and off the field issues, these always seem to wane over the time - probably compounded by South's/Sydney's lack of success.

Personally, though, I'm hoping the East vs the West rivalry (should we call it the "Cold War Rivalry"? ) with the Eagles has the legs. Nothing has fired me up in football like the West Coast games over the last couple of years.

The adjoining teams had bitter feuds throughout their years and when South moved to Sydney the animosity wasn't dimmed, nor when Fitzroy merged with Brisbane. The Lions and the Swans, a real rivalry. I'm suprised and dismayed more don't know about this.
I have never heard of this nor read anything to suggest Fitzroy were rivals of ours.

Fitzroy and Collingwood and Fitzroy and Carlton are neighbours and as far as I understood it had some decent rivalry going. South and St Kilda were neighbours and rivals.

If you can point me in the direction of some literature describing our rivalry with Fitzroy then I'd appreciate it.

I note also that Ainters are pretty feral when we play them ... especially when they win. They are feral sore winners!!
