I wrote to the club a few years back suggesting that the captain wear #14 with that players # being retired until the captaincy changes. Maxie was captain at the time. I said Maxie should wear #14 and #11 is retired until Maxie either retires or relinquishes the captaincy, in which case he returns to his #11. Shortly afterwards Richmond went down that track with Dyer's #17.
Stephen Brassell bailed me up at a function not long after and told me thay received the correspondence but the general feeling was the players were too attached to their own numbers and wouldn't warm to the idea. I'm not sure if that 'general feeling' was of the players or the office staff who kicked the idea around over lunch.
In this age of multiple captains I think it could again be considered. The captain of the day wears #14 and reverts back to #1, #21, #31 the following week or whatever it may be.
Feelings??

Skilts wore it, Kelly wore it, and they're arguably the two biggest names in the history of Sydney/South Melbourne. I'd like to see it go to either O'Keefe or Malceski, they're going to be wearing the red n white for years to come, and they'd be two candidates for a number that should be held in high reguard always.
