And he played Test Cricket for Australia to boot - no sh**e.....

My dad says Skilton, but he does love to talk about Laurie Nash and how great he was.

          * 2 Test matches - batting average 15, bowling 10 wickets at 12.60. Would have played more Test cricket but was unpopular with the powers that be. "The reasons given for the apparent poor attitude towards Nash include his reputation for calling a spade a spade, his abrasive personality, which included sledging and even the fact that he wore cut off sleeves, which was considered a serious faux pas in the 1930s" - Wikipedia

          * Also scored 18 goals in a game for Victoria vs South Australia

          * South Melbourne career: 99 matches, 246 goals

Yes that uber-confidence sounds very much like a certain #39 who also played for South Melb / Swans .. oh yes, what was Nash's guernsey number BTW?

I don't live in Collingwood and it's the only good thing about Nathan Buckley..he likes pugdogs.

My parents remembered Laurie Nash and would rave about him also. He had a Tasmanian connection but I'm too tired from netball to remember it.

Laurie Nash was a Tasmanian who moved to Victoria to further his football and cricket careers. As a cricketer bowled Bradman for duck in a testimonal match. Not cricket old chap !!!! I READ A STORY ABOUT NASH NOT RECEIVING BETTER TREATMENT IN HIS TEST CAREER AND IT INVOLVED AN INCIDENT AT A POST MATCH FUNCTION.

Any reason why he played so few games for SMFC? That's only about 5 seasons' worth.

Just unearthed this little Gem on Wikipedia....

Nash's great sporting success can be partly contributed to his self-confidence (when once asked who was the greatest footballer he had ever seen, Nash replied: "I see him in the mirror every morning when I shave"), Nash was a superbly fit athlete who never smoked or drank and dedicated himself to a punishing exercise regime, something rare in 1930s sports circles.
Here's the link..... Laurie Nash - Wickipedia

A lot of talk about how he was stiffed by the Australian cricket selectors..... Interesting read nonetheless

A number of seasons with Camberwell and then WWII.

Not only that, but VFL players were offered large sums of money to play VFA, interstate or in the country back in those days (ie. 1930-60). Some of the best footballers in the VFL at the time ended up leaving at their peak to play VFA (Ron Todd, Laurie Nash etc) or interstate (Hayden Bunton etc).
