Earl Shaw and rucks

I could be barking up the wrong tree, but when I read this permission-to-train list, Sydney's strange delisting of Earl Shaw made more sense to me.

The club have got their eyes on one or two specific young ruck prospects for the national draft, who they believe are a better bet than Earl, and who they will take with a late pick if still available. If these other players have already been nabbed, they'll pick up Earl again. Earl remains the insurance policy; but this way, if they do get the guy they're after, they don't need to keep a career-doomed Earl on the list for another 12 months.

Likely that Brent Renouf (who, despite being born in Sydney, is a Queensland player) is one of them. Anyone's guess who the other or others might be.

Brent Renouf has been talked about as a top 20 pick so he is very unlikely to be as late draft steal.

Given Sydney's long-established approach to rucks, and public statements by Roos as well, I would be flabbergasted if we pick a ruckman with #15.

Leuenberger is apparently a 'special case', but generally rucks are very prone to slide in the ND, precisely because they're long-term, uncertain projects. I wouldn't be surprised to see Renouf and one or two other touted ruck prospects still available at our second pick.

Yeh you might be up the wrong tree Simon. All I can gather is the 2 named are the only ones of those delisted who they thought were worth redrafting.

Dont forget also they need to delist a certain number of players. So these blokes give them some insurance if what they are after doesnt fall perfectly. You would reckon if they weren't in the runnng they may have been training with someone else, particularly Davis who is from Adelaide.

I guess one can read into anything how we want, that's my slant.

We won't be using pick 15 on a ruckman.

It will be a KP defender/forward or go a midfielder they deem to good to pass up at 15 should one slip down the order.

Saying that I can see them taking Earl back with our fourth pick irrespective of whether they draft another young ruckman with our second or third pick.

But they didn't need to delist them. Even if Leo Barry and MOL are both to remain inside the 38, they could have saved one of them and still dumped the required numbers (and promoted Phillips/Simpkin). If just one of Leo/MOL is to go on the vets list, they could have saved both. It's not like pick #81 (Sydney's 4th) will be especially valuable. This was why the whole thing didn't make a great deal of sense to me at the time.

I agree that Kurt Tippett is another candidate. This is a draft with a lot of hyped midfielders/KPPs, at a time where a lot of clubs have either topped up their ruck stocks by trading (Carlton, St Kilda) or are simply full already (Essendon, Adelaide). It's the perfect environment in which to take a punt that a 'quality' ruckman like Renouf or Tippett could fall to #49.

Still think it would be one of the most bizarre drafting decisions of all time if Sydney picked up Matt Davis again (even as a rookie: what else are we going to see that we haven't seen in the first 3 years?), and there is probably less than meets the eye to the fact he's continuing to train with us.

Interested to see that he's training with the Pahhhhr. He's mostly played school footy (Sacred Heart, as swantastic said, who are traditionally the best school team in Adelaide) and has been on absolutely no-one's likely draftee list. The Pahhhr must rate him higher than many of the self-appointed draft 'experts' out there.

Matt Fosdike is also kicking around, but must be too young for draft consideration as he played U/17s this year. No idea what happened to Tom Fosdike, as he appears not to have gone into the SANFL system in 2006. They're all no doubt related to rangy, fast-paced half-forward flanker of the 1980s Duncan Fosdike.

And Luke Crouch (I don't know how close the relation is) plays league for Norwood, too. Families hunt in packs around Norwood way. Phew.

Dale Lewis is the coach of the Red Legs(Noorwood) Football Club so if there is any good youngster coming through the club he could tell the swans.Hopefuly all his comments about drugs in footy havnt burnt that bridge.

It's possible also that being a Sydney boy, Earl Shaw is training with Sydney because that is the most convenient for him (and also why Willoughby has returned to SA).

As for Matt Davis, I have no idea. Perhaps it's just a goodwill gesture and he's staying in Sydney until his future is decided after the various drafts.

I think we'll go for best available with our #15 and I wouldn't rule out a midfielder but more likely tall forward.
