How is that going to work? There's going to undless amounts of free kicks being paid.
unless the players hear about the rules and stop putting their hands in the backs of others.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

If that is true then it's the end of the pack mark too. You won't be able to leap over anyone in case you touch their back with their hands.

This actually sounds like the way that teachers would unpire games when I was in grade 5. That's where it belongs, not on the field in the AFL.

Did Adrian Anderson ever have a career as a player? Just a question.

I think this will be a disaster.
The season will probably start with a heap of free kicks for in the back then after about the 3rd week, everyone will be up in arms and the AFL will tell the umpires to tone the interpretation down.

Exactly like it was with the deliberate out of bounds last year.

Malthouse made the same comment. The people changing the rules have never played.

Why is there such a percieved need to keep refining our game? Sure, the occasional rule interpretation may change but to have a different rule every year is just getting ridiculous. And what ever happened to the notion that all new rules were to be tried out in the pre-season comp first to see how players and fans reacted to it, if it was effective, and if it was even possible to police?

The AFL needs to wake up and realise that the game is a great product, it doesn't need this incessent "tweaking". Ask most if not any fan and they'll say that with rules all they want is CONSISTANCY between the three field umpires on the paddock. New rule changes and interpretations just seem to bollocks it up more. Get the umpires thinking the same, and don't change the rules that made this game great (for instance, the arm slap, the bumps, the manhandling by two players to get position).

Okay, so some may argue that they aren't fair, but that's what gives a sport its flavour. Do we think it was fair that Totti got that penalty in the dying seconds of Australia vs Italy in the World Cup? Of course not. But FIFA isn't going to change the rules over it. The incident hieghtens the spectacle and makes people marvel at the way sport reflects life which, by the way, is not fair.

It remains to be seen how deeply this will affect us. But this is yet again an example of a rule being brought in without proper consultation. These "rules-on-the-fly" have to stop.

Shouldn't AFL test the rule first in pre-season games, before introducing it in the main H&A season?

This will no doubt hurt Micky, and Hall too to an extent. O'Loughlin had possibly his most consistent season and finally looked settled in his role, and confident in his body work, and now they throw this pansy rule into the mix to gay everything up
