I watched the ?65 Grannie on ABC2 the other night, especially to look at the marking contests. If the intent of the new (old) ITB in marking contests is to return to the 60?s interpretation then in the main I have no complaints. There was none of the pushing and shoving which has become an accepted part of todays footy ? quite simply the bloke who was in the right position or who judged the flight better took the mark. Defenders had to accept their fate if they were found out of position ? the few times I saw any try to initiate body contact when out of position they were immediately penalised. The only downer was when big Carl Ditteritch had a screamer taken away because he took a ride ? free kick ITB! Please no.
In general the field kicking was absolutely shocking ? blokes were continually trying for drop kicks when under pressure and very few even looked where their kicks were going. Highlights were John Burt?s stab passes to Fordham at full forward (glorious) and the Essendon full back?s 70 yard drop kicks, didn?t fluff one all match ? wouldn?t they make a mess of a modern zone defence. Interestingly, the only player on the field who used a drop punt as the kick of choice in field play was Darrell Baldock. A couple used it when shooting for goal, but other than that it was all drops, torps, mongrels and the occasional stab.
With no Fox Footy, Late Night Legends is the only thing keeping me sane this summer. Why can?t the ABC ditch the rubbish and give us Prime Time Legends at 7.30? .
