    Italian Team Of the Century.

2 Brownlow Medallists, 10 All-Australians, 1 Team of the century

    141 players nominated

3 Swans - Filiandia, Licuria and A Rocca.

I doubt any of those will make the cut.

You only have to be Italian and have played one game to be nominated.

Good cause they are supporting though.

I don't know that we'd class Rocca or Licca as Swans these days, and Filandia was... average at best lol.

There's a lot more ex-Swans there than just those three.

However, they appear to have a loose interpretation of what an Italian is....................

Was rather talented with his teeth though. You'd have to admit that!

I wouldn't have thought that only playing one game makes you a great of VFL/AFL football. Essentially every player of Italian heritage who has played 1 game or more is listed.

That list isn't the team AFAIK - it's just a list of Italian players whom everyone can nominate. From that lot they will pick the team.

Don't know how Latvians and Maltese players qualify, but anyway, good idea.

Typical and disgraceful Victorian-centric rewriting of history.

"Acknowledging 100 years of Australia [sic] rules and the Italian legacy on [sic] the great Indigenous game", the blurb says. However, it ain't true. The criteria are that pre-1990, only those Italians who have contributed to Australian rules in one particular state are acknowledged. That's right, play a single VFL game, you're eligible; play 200 SANFL/WAFL games, and you don't qualify.

So far as I'm aware, in the pre-AFL era SA produced relatively few Italian-background players of the calibre of Dipierdomenico (I couldn't comment about the situation in WA). But that's not to say that there weren't many fine players. Just to pluck out one name: Aldo Floreani played over 200 games for West Torrens. He didn't win any Magareys and so might not get a guernsey in the final team, but there can be no doubt that he contributed more to the "Italian legacy on the great Indigenous game" than Renato Dintinosante, Adelio Dozzi, Peter Maloni, Clarence Morelli et al.

No problem with the many great players of Italian origin who played in the VFL being honoured with being named in a 'best of' team, chosen by a panel of legends of the VFL. But leave out the 'recognising the (entire) contribution by Italians to our Indigneous game' crap.

So did you nominate him as you are asked to on the site?

He doesn't qualify. See the selection criteria:

"To ensure credibility [sic] with the selection process, a player is eligible for selection in the Italian Team of the Century if he meets the following key criteria:

that he has played senior VFL/AFL football..."

                              That is the whole point.
