Mulrooney Medal winner Spriggs is gone but Smokey keeps on keeping on... WTF is up with that? I hope he at least gets named as an emergency some time this year, I'd like to see him progress.

The selectors are confused with the name, that's the only explanation I can find. Unless he's just not good enough.Does God believe in Atheists?Comment

I couldn't handle two Davos ... especially if the youngster was not especially all that talented.

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

I keep seeing Smokey Davis getting ribbed without a lot of knowledge of what this kid has gone through. When I spoke with the coaches last year, they were really hopeful he would have an injury free year and get his confidence back.
The kid, spotted by Ricky Barham who is not bad a judge of young talent, was recruited at the age of 17 without any senior experience and proceeded to have 2 seasons of what can only be decribed as torture.
He is still only young and still growing. The coaches obviously have faith in him to give him another go. They let Powell go and others before Davis so that says some talent must be there.
He has the size to be very useful so lets hope he has a great pre-season and then goes on. Its now up to him to show us what he has.

All sounds very nice, but the bad news is that he hasn't been 'retained'. He's been demoted to the rookie list (through the usual tortuous process b/c there's no direct demotion). So barring long-term injury to someone and Smokey being picked as the promotion (and you'd be flabbergasted if Earl Shaw or Luke Brennan weren't at the front of that queue), he can't play for the Swans' firsts next year. As a result of that ineligibility, he can't even be 'selected' as an emergency.
Good luck to him. I hope he scorches in 2007. But he's pretty much guaranteed at the end of it to have gone 4 years with the Swans without having played a senior game. And he'll need to be re-promoted before he can come into consideration for selection in 2008. So people shouldn't get their hopes too high.Comment

In a year where rookie players from NSW were thin on the ground, we were always going to keep one or both of Davis & Shaw on our list as rookies.
Hopefully Davis can get his body right and get on the park next year to give it a shot at AFL level.
