I miss 'The Footy'

I was at the Test match yesterday at the MCG and it made me realise something very important . . . . I really miss 'The Footy.'

I spent much of the day imagining where the goal posts would be and then could see A Goodes steaming onto a B Hall handpass and slotting it through the sticks from 50 out. Then it was ROK dominating St Kilda in the 05 Prelim on the half-forward/centre/half-back line. Ahhhh good times.

But it's not just our boys that I miss. I miss the sound of the siren. I miss the umpires in their canary yellow outfits. I miss watching lopsided Friday night footy. I almost miss Collingwood supporters. Almost.

I remember the anticipation I felt before the first NAB Cup match this year. This match (Lions/Bombers at Carrara from memory) meant absolutely zero in the overall scheme of things, yet I was jumping out of my skin the whole week prior to the first bounce.

I love my cricket, and have been a 'cricket-man' my whole life, but there's just something about 'The Footy' . . . . .

I am in two minds. While the footy is on it often tortures me when we lose etc but as soon as it is over I miss it. I went past the MCG yesterday and it only has bad memories for me at this stage. But funnily enough I also walked past Telstra Dome yesterday (it was a long walk) and seeing the Dome made me more excited. The surface looks really good - very green.

I've been having a nostalgia-fest.
I've watched Pluggers 1300th a few times.
I've watched Kels & Dunks last game.
I've watched the 2005 Five-Pack DVD Finals Series
I've watched the 2006 granny.
I've read Paul Kelly's book.

The Aussies have won the Ashes.
I'm bored.
Bring back the footy.

I just miss my swans and the joy I get from being picked up by dad to go to the game ...getting my red and white gear on....walking from the members car park...I could go on for ages....

I watched the 2006 season hghlights the other day and i suddenly had the 'footy feeling'. Every time i see our boys running around or i'm watching them at the game i get so excited and nervous and happy! i got those feelings the other day and now i just long for next season to begin! I told my sister who also loves the swans but she can't love them as much as me coz she's never felt those things!

I miss the footy ,especially going to the SCG and TS and sitting with all the throng of Swans supporters.It was the best feeling this year at the Freo game at TS.I love the bloods and miss em.

I was watching the cricket yesterday and could almost pick out my seat from the 2005 GF. That day will always be in my memory every time I go past or into the "G".

But arriving in the city at Southern Cross station right next to the dome made me realise how much I miss the footy. I love the cricket, but even winning the Ashes pales into insignificance next to winning the AFL premiership in 2005.

That is why I'm happy I have the FC & Kings to follow. One season finishes & another starts up. I don't ever get that "I'm having footy withdrawals" syndrome you guys are refering to at all.

The way I go is
September-into both, but naturally at
finals time the Swans passion is at fever pitch. Am kind of confused, as I have to juggle following both during this period.

-October. Footy is over, so I'm starting to get into the A League more and more.

November. Am totally over the footy season & am in full on World Game mode. I stay up on Saturday nights to listen to the streaming of matches on www.bundesliga.de. Am finally completely unwound from a long hard Swans season.

December. Still very very much in FC mode. Will occasionally get out the Swans seasons highlights DVD to remind myself that they still exist. But am very very much in FC mode.

January: Still very much in FC mode. But start reading about how pre-season in going. Find out about new recruits, injuries etc etc

February: A League finals, so my FC passion is at full tilt. I do still dust the cobwebs off and make and appearance at North Sydney Oval for the game there, but the passion is not all back yet.

March: The A League season is over. So I do start thinking about the Swans more. Pre-season AFL is more meh than it ever has been; we take the Wizard Cup LESS seriously than some of the practice matches that happen after it. I don't travel to Canberra any more to go and watch the Wizard Cup. It just isn't worth it. A few weeks later I might pop up to Newcastle to watch them play up there. That isn't a bay day at all. Footy passion starts coming back slowly.

April: Footy is back. I'm there but I find myself often struggling to get into it at times at the first match. Get my new members hat and feel strange putting it on for the first time.Often much of the first match is spent catching up with people I have not seen for 6 months. By Round 3 I'm generally right. If Round 1 or 2 is away & I'm travelling, I'm more 'up for it than when it is at home.

However in Round 1 2007 motivation will NOT be a problem. I think it will be that way for quite a few of us for obvious reasons. I might even dare watch a DVD of the GF in the lead-up to the match to get the hate-juices flowing again.

Maybe on the weekend before Round 1 we can have an RWO Swans BBQ to all get us in the mood for the footy season?

Or maybe we could all organise to meet at a pub like the Alexandria or something and watch the Wizard Cup final together?

Anyone up for something like that?

You're right, it is good to have a life, but I still miss the footy. I don't know what it is, there is just something about the footy that makes it so much better than any other sport.

My life used to revolve around sport, but then I grew up and got a real life.
