Bit worrying when a player says he was pretty sure he'd be drafted - the year before! And then goes very late this year. Ties in with the Swans' earlier comments that he needs to learn what AFL football is really all about.

    Let's hope he's a quick study!

You're spot on Liz...he sends out a vibe that makes me think the "no DH policy" wasn't working when his name was called.

I hope I'm wrong though. A bargain find would be nice.

I would say he is finding out a lot of what it is about right now at the AFL and Player Assn. Draft and Rookies Orientation Camp, that goes through in minute detail of all aspects of what they can expect and do in their coming careers.

Or he could be one of these players who are a little eccentric or have the X factor who just turn out to be gems. Footy history if full of them.

This will be my bet...its good to have a kid with heaps of confidence/arrogance in himself. Kudos to him.

Yep. I agree, I think there is nothing wrong with having confidence in yourself. I also think a touch of arrogance is part of the make up of every top sports person.

                Looking at his stats from the (December) 2005 National Schools basketball tournament I'll make the wild statements that;
                1. He knows how to score- 20.8 ppg
                2. He isn't a big unco kid- he hit 80% of his free throws
                3. He can put in good dynamic effort- he grabbed 3 offensive rebounds per game
                4. He may not like roughing it up- he wasn't in the top 10 for fg% which suggests that he wasn't playing too close to the basket... he also didn't figure in the top 10 for total rebounds or blocked shots
I found a story on the championship game from that tournament, apparently Jesse was the stand out with a great job stopping Andrew Ogilvy (who is a lot taller than Jesse, is headed off to a big Division 1 college school and is a definite NBA prospect).

Different sport I know but there are a lot of similarities between the two as far as common mechanics and required physical attributes.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Did you know that Paul Roos was more than just a handy junior basketballer? Did he see something from White's basketball background that struck a chord?

Doesn't Roosy still play basketball? I know he's great mates with Brian Gorgian (sp?).

He was on crutches during the finals series.

Or to put it another way, as my dad said after a few years' involvement with the local club, 'footballers are for the footy field'.

That is to say, while we'd like to believe that everyone on the Swans list is a lovely, well-rounded gentleman who opens doors for grandmas etc (and of course, many are), the fact is that a lot of professional football players are just good footy players, with not too many outstanding personal skills or appealing features beyond their athletic abilities. Arrogance and unshakeable self-belief are in the makeup of many elite sportspeople (see: Warne, SK) but not so many people you'd want for a close personal mate (see: Warne, SK).

It's not even a sports-specific thing. Picasso was apparently a bit of an arsehole, Stan Getz a wife-beater etc etc (we can say nasty things about 'em 'cos they're dead). But they were absolutely top o' their craft.

Could Paul Roos possibly be arrogant too?

That is an absolutely shocking, disgusting, libellous suggestion. And I'm going to use my special In Crowd powers to ensure that you are banished from these boards forever, unless you withdraw and apologise immediately.
