Are Melbourne Swans fans big losers in Foxtel deal?

Don't blame Channel 7 for this, blame Channel 9.

9 wanted the 1pm Sunday Timeslot in this contract so they could show a live AFL match into NSW and QLD before their NRL match at 4pm, they just never expected Channel 7 and 10 to match the $780 million bid and hence the terms 9 set out in their offer to the AFL. I'm sure this is going to be a one year issue before the AFL put us in more 2pm Sunday games to suit our needs (if we request it as a club of course)

Just remember if 7 and 10 went it alone without Fox then 10 would of been the ones telecasting the 1pm and 5pm games on Sunday's.

As for ratings, that point is very moot because we have been one of the highest watched clubs on TV over the last few years nationally and if ratings played a major role on what games got shown on TV, then I'm sure NO games would be shown on FTA in Sydney would they???

Where two non Melb teams play(or any v Roos), the ratings aren't all that flash, however when a Melb team is playing the ratings improve.
So there Hammo's point is fairly valid. While there is a strong contingent of Vic Swan supporters, they do not outweigh the Melb based team support in Melb.

Unless you don't have Fox I can't see how you have been shafted. The games are still being played at the same time as they were yesterday, it's just now they'll be shown on a different network - with far less ads for one thing. If you don't have it the issue then becomes whether or not you make the effort to go see it somewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I understand you being grumpy if you don't have access to pay TV, but it's the same we northern state footy fans have been going through for years for the games not involving Sydney on Friday or Saturday night, and were still getting until this season with the Sunday game Nine screened at 4pm in non-NRL states.

A don't really GAF that they relocated to Sydney, it meant that they got to exist.

I'm not going to fly to Sydney 7 times a year, and I'm not getting oxtel (for many reasons)

The WORST part of all this for Melbourne based supporters is that there won't be radio coverage for most of the games we miss.

It's a disgrace that we can't watch the games on free to air and the AFL are the ones who have shafted the fans ultimately.

After the last TV rights deal when I was sitting here trying to get internet updates of the scores as I didn't have TV or radio coverage, I emailed the AFL and they said that there was nothing they could do about the coverage as the deal had already been put into place (BS) but that they would resolve the problem next time the rights are negotiated.

I will only be come less interested in football when I can't see it.

Thats the most frustrating part, CTS, when there is no FREE coverage at all.

Another concern for the Swans is that if Seven shows only the scheduled 2.10pm games in Melbourne, their large contingent of Melbourne-based supporters (more than 7000 members last season) will be able to watch the Swans' Sunday afternoon games only on Foxtel. That would also mean the broad national free-to-air coverage given to the Swans sponsors would be reduced.

With negotiations continuing yesterday, the best hope for those southern Swans relying on free-to-air coverage is that not all 1.10pm matches will be shown on Foxtel, and there remains some flexibility in the allocation of Sunday afternoon games between Foxtel and Seven.

All is not lost, YET.

Elsewhere, the AFL can prepare itself for a backlash from Victorians fans, with more games played by Melbourne clubs outside their home state likely to be shown on pay television, a cultural shift for fans used to being able to attend a match or watch it on free-to-air.

The point wasn't about being able to watch other teams play, although that has also been reduced on FTA. It was about not being able to watch the Swans play. Personally I don't give a continental what other games are televised, I just want to watch the Swans games. I know I can't expect to see tham all as is available to Sydney viewers, but to have at least 7 games that will not be televised takes us back to the bad old days of channel 7.

You appear to be rather ill informed about the popularity of a number of the 9 Melbourne based clubs. If what you said is true then the Kangaroos, Hawthorn, Bulldogs and Melbourne would not be in the financial difficulties that they are due to their vast popularity in Melbourne. (Carlton is in a different basket due to stupidity of past management.)

If that was true I could accept that, but figures tend to show that some of the Melbourne based clubs are not as popular as some outside of Melbourne may think.

We have 7,000 Melbourne-based members, maybe 10 thousand more 'dedicated' fans. That is still less than the memberships of all Victorian clubs.

The V8s won't be on every week so hopefully there is some flexibility shown by 7 for you guys down there.

I recall reading somewhere just after the end of last season that ALL games will be covered on the radio in Melbourne, but would have to find the info to confirm - will see what I can find. So all might not be lost yet.
