Easy for me to comment, living in Sydney and having Foxtel, but I'm sure some Melbournian's will make the most of the situation.

I know if I couldn't get the away matches live in Sydney, I would definately be getting a few friends together and off to a club or somebodies house and enjoying the game, commercial free siren to siren I might add.

I doubt in the end it will come to that and I'm sure if circumstances have forced this situation for season 2007 it will be remedied in 2008+, but I can think of some positives out of it.

In regards to Radio coverage in Melbourne, there are two "Gold" radio stations and two "Silver" radio stations.
The two Gold stations are 3MMM & 3AW and they cover Friday Night, their pick Sat Arvo, their pick Sat night & the middle game on Sunday. The two silver stations are 1116SEN & ABC and they cover Friday night, the two "lesser" games on Sat, and the early and twilight games on Sunday, so all games will be on radio and you get a choice between 4 on Friday and 2 for every other game. I know for a fact that SEN are ramping up their coverage and are calling themselves the home of AFL as they have 5 games a weekend, plus other shows in the pipelines. Hope this helps, maybe just confuses????

Sadly whether we like it or not sport on TV around the world is headed more towards Pay TV than it is toward Free to Air and yet the AFL somehow manages to keep half of it matches on Free to Air and get more money than the last deal in the process. The NRL didn't manage that and they get only 3 games on FTA under their new contract out of 8.

I know what you're saying, but it's like telling someone who lost a leg "hey! at least you didn't lose BOTH legs!!!"
It provides a sense of good fortune for a moment and then you come back to Earth and realise that what is affecting us right now is the possibility of not seeing around 1/3 of Swans games unless you fly to Sydney or purchase Foxtel.

Guess we'll wait and see how it plays out.....

True and if your team is not selected often for Friday night, then you have buckleys chance of seeing your NRL team on free to air.

One would think that AFL might fiddle with the draw in future years to make sure that all teams are spread across Pay and FTA, otherwise clubs could put together a case for equalisation payments due to being on Pay more than FTA which will have a dramatic effect on sponsorship.

You may not even see Carlton on FTA this year!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whilst I can sympathise with Melbourne based fans who will miss out on swans FTA, it really gets down to how much you love your footy and the Swans. Sixty bucks a month is chicken feed ? anybody who owns a computer and has an internet account can afford it. I suggest that if the Swans are really important to you, then you will cough up. I know when cable arrived in the (then) footy starved Sydney I cut the Optus salesman?s pitch short with ?where do I sign?. Sydney girl Mrs ORB thought I was a lunatic, she?s probably right, but after 25 odd years in the footy desert I lapped up C7 up like a parched Bedouin at an oasis.

Whining and moaning will achieve nothing. Pay TV is now a fact of life. Those who refuse to subscribe on principle don?t really care that much about their footy. That is their choice.

More than $1000 for a 2-year subscription just to watch an extra 10 or so games on TV is far from chicken feed. Many of us may be lucky enough to be able to afford it, but it's another thing to be able to justify over $100/game when you've got to consider a mortgage, school fees etc etc

I agree. $720/year is bigger than most yearly bills.

I watch 2 hours or less FTA TV a day, not worth it.

As i've told the salesmen, when they have a sport only package, I'll sign up, I don't want to pay for all the other @@@@ I won't watch.

People like me with hefty mortgages will find $60 a month to be far from chicken feed. A single rise in interest rates cost me almost $60 extra a month, and the six rates rises I have endured since I bought my unit have made Foxtel an unaffordable luxury.

I see no point in forking out $100 a game for a Foxtel subscription when I could spend far less and (a) watch the game at a Swans pub, (b) watch the game at a friend's place, (c) listen to the game on radio. I could even use some of the money I save on not buying Foxtel (a) buying a Swans Victorian membership, (b) flying to Sydney to watch one home game live on that membership.

Not that I don't feel your pain, but in some ways, I'm a bit shocked that Melbourne Swans fans have enjoyed as many live swans games as they suggest - surely Hawks fans in Adelaide or Crows fans in Perth don't get to see too many of their games live?
