    Tiggers at Manuka

Good to see a few more players this weekend. Interesting to see how a few of the fringe players will go with better players around them. White looks OK IMHO but his goal kicking needs some work as it looks a little nervous. Maybe it will improve with experience.

    Spida to debut
Everitt, Darren Jolly, Michael O'Loughlin, Leo Barry, Tadhg Kennelly, Jude Bolton and Nic Fosdike are all expected to be added to the inexperienced squad beaten by the Bulldogs in the first-round NAB Cup match in Canberra on Saturday.

Look, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade or screw around with our preparation, but surely half of these guys could of been playing last weekend???

Appreciate the whole thing about blooding new players, etc. But if we're just going to throw all of our normal starting line up in the week after we've been knocked out would seem to be ass about.

For mind, why don't we play our team as best we can (With due consideration for resting the likes of Micky O, Spida, Hall, Jolly, etc for round 1 of the season proper), and then (if) we are knocked out, then we throw these guys out there.

Playing only 8 of our starting 22 like we did last week, only really rips off the supporters IMHO.

"A week is a long time in football!"

I totally agree with you! Surely at least some of those 'ready' this week could have played with an 8 player interchange last week and then we could have blooded some youngsters in the coming scratch matches.

I've never quite understood Roosie's philosophy to the pre-season comp. While other coaches, not only in AFL but also in rugby, league and football, want to develop "a winning culture" in their sides, no matter what the game, we mess around in the pre-season by not having a decent dip at it.
I believe we should always have a shot at the first round, and if you get knocked out, there are three more weeks to blood and tryout the newbies. By not taking it seriously, we can end up paying the price injurywise by having to play games on substandard grounds as well (ie Newcastle a couple of years ago).
I'm also disappointed this year that we are a game shy of last year (and no reduction in price -- equivalent to a hefty rise of about 3 times the cpi) and the second week of preseason playing in Canberra again. I don't know if any Swans games are scheduled for sydney in the next few weeks, perhaps someone out there knows...but I cant afford the time or cost to be going down to Canberra every week! As well as twice in the h&a season.
"Davis...Davis has kicked 2...he snaps from 40...dont tell me, dont tell me, hes kicked a goal....unbelievable stuff from Nick Davis, can you believe this, he's kicked 3 final quarter goals and Swans are within 3 points..."

RP, who cares about the Ansett cup? How many senior players were injured this weekend from all teams? It's not worth the risk.
Let's see ... Blues, Bulldogs, Quokkas, Bushrats, Port, Aints, Cats & Melbourne.
For most - bottom of the rung. For the others, 2007 finals fodder.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

              Annie,

Your eloquence never ceases to amaze me....

You're right, of course, but it if we're scared of injuring them against the bulldogs in the NAB cup last week, then why the @@@@ are we playing them this week against the Tiggers??

Some of you guys havn't understood the club's policy on this issue. Until each player has done a certain quantity of traiing "miles" he is deemed not ready for a competitive game because of the risk of injury. As the kids start training earlier, they are ready first. We saw what happened to Schneider at NSO, do you want the same thing to happen to Micky O, BBB and ROK?

That is a large part of it.

Plus I reckon the club wants to give every possible youngster the chance to play a competitive game alongside a smattering of senior players to see what they have got. Roos stated that neither Schneider nor Bevan were even on the radar for a round one debut in their respective debut years, but forced their way into reckoning purely due to performance in those pre-season games.

And I also suspect that Roos would rather lose in the first round. That means he has three weeks of practice games where he can

                    a) use as many or as few players as he likes and hence ease the senior players in gradually - not possible to do with the restricted interchange bench of NAB Cup games; and

                    b) work on the game plan under the same rules that will be in place during the H&A, without getting sidetracked by differences in kicking backwards, super goals and different boundary throw-ins.

Thanks again to liz for an educated post on this topic, in particular reguarding the rules. With nine pointers, there's a good chance that the final score isn't a true indication of how even, or one sided, a match was. The new throw-ins mean that our usual set plays can't be applied efficiently. And, what would usually have been a normal passage of play, could be affected by the kicking back rule applied in the NAB cup.

                        1. cause you gotta feel sorry for the tiges, they need all the practice they can get against a champion team; and
                        2. cause I'm going to canberra for the drive to have a look-see.

depends on how literally you take the speed limits. we did manuka-sydney in 3 hours, which included a 20 minute stop in Goulburn, and driving in torrential rain. however, its probably better to leave 3 and a half or 4 hours. theres a fairly good chance of getting lost into or out of canberra!
