Stupid idea. Now this is a thread that i would expect on the ego -centric, wank session that is redandwhiteonline.com...

I think it's a good idea. Teams often throw a ruckman back in defence to play the 'loose man' in defence role, this isn't entirely different to that really. It could definitely ease some of the pressure on players like Leo and Bolton.Comment

Not looking good for Doyles year.
'Spida' shows his bite
Roos said it was early days, but believed Everitt sharing the rucking duties with Darren Jolly had the potential to make the Swans a more attacking team this season.
"I think the personnel around the stoppages sometimes dictates how attacking you can become," Roos said.
"`We'll all learn more about Spida and `Jols' (Jolly) working together over the next couple of weeks. Certainly there were some really good hits around the forward stoppages, bearing in mind Richmond had two pretty young ruckmen."The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.Comment

This is hardly the break through tactic of 2007....
What did you think LRT and Ted have been doing for the last 12mths???
Assuming Doyle can play a season without injuring himself, Spida fits in like we all hope, we get back LRT at some stage, and Ted continues to play the way he has, we'll have a lot taller team this year than we did last year. It's only inevitable that we'll have talls both back and forward. And that, IMO, isn't a bad thing!Comment

I think Jolly is one of the worst defensive ruckmen going around. Has a lot of good points, but his defending certainly isnt one of them.
Not so much around the ground, but his oponents seems to shake him so easily inside d50.He ate more cheese, than time allowedComment

Playing back isn't Jolly's forte. But then playing ruck isn't Ted Richards' forte, and coincidentally getting a stint in ruck coincided with his huge form reversal last year. Sometimes you get the best out of players when you force them to play out of their comfort zone. If you're going to try to teach an established player a new skill, matches against proper opposition, with nothing riding on them, are the logical place to do it.
I reckon that Roos wants to play all 3 of Doyle, Jolly and Everitt (or at least have the option of doing so against appropriate opposition); and wants to try to work out a structure that allows him to do that.Comment

i've only ever seen the freakishly talented 2m+ players like the maddens, salmon and everitt play well regularly in a non-ruck key position and most of them star as forwards, not down back. jolly is simply not in that category.
simon has a good point that he may respond well to the challenge and learn a lot which he can then take back to his rucking game. the best we can hope for from him and this experiment is that he becomes a regular and reliable ruckman.then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i knowComment
