It's either a junior reporter/typesetter or Roosy has some early form of Tourette's.
He's just saying that it's not as if they haven't focussed or tried in the first few rounds previously - just that they are more aware of the fact they have a history of starting poorly and are addressing it.
Edit: I'm struggling to explain it without also using a double negative!
