Interesting rule that may work in making us less dominant...although we had some close games last year

My concern is what this rule does for us developing our younger players. Assume for a minute Crouch was playing...using the reserves to get match fitness. Assume also Matthew Davis, Luke Brennan, Mathhew O'Dwyer, Paul Bevan were also fit and playing....heck lets even imagine LRT is back. That would mean that a couple of reserves list players would not play.

On several occasions if a reserves list player misses a game through this rule, than he will actually miss two games in a row because there are several byes

This is yet another example why being part of the Canberra comp is not the best solution for our club. I do hope that the AFL does revive the Reserves comp and has it as a comp with teams from Sydney and Brisbane

The only positive i see is allowing us to look at some of the top-up players as future drafts

I am also wondering whether the rule allows Craig Bird to play as one of the top-ups.

That's another reason that it sucks.

Can't see why it wouldn't. He is not a listed AFL player, despite making the affiliation official via the scholarship scheme.

Good to see Grundy listed to play. Hopefully he can put himself in the mix for senior selection in a few weeks.

              Made little difference today.
              19.13 (127) 7.9 (51)

Goals: Shaw 4 Rowe 3 White 3 Bird 2 Schneider 2 Barlow Doyle Brabazon Schmidt D.O'Keefe

Bird did play as a topup player, and played well in #49. Grundy was missing, must still be troubled by that back.

White was impressive early at CHF/FF, crashing through Demons players to rove a couple of loose balls. Switched with Rowe to CHB after half time and struggled a little. Very athletic for his size, he's a steal at whatever 60-something draft pick we took him with.
Rowe started at CHB and gave far too much room to his opponent, although to his credit did affect a few spoils. Went forward in the 2nd half with good results, his kicking action is very solid.
Schmidt dominated again early, his understanding of Doyle's tapwork was almost intuitive. He must have gone off in the 2nd half sometime as I only noticed his absence then.
Moore was good too in the midfield, he has lightning quick hands that allow him to retrieve numerous loose balls.
Shaw was a massive presence in the goalsquare. All he had to do was stick out his two long arms and the ball would stick as if his palms were made of glue.
DOK (and yes that was his nickname during the game)'s similarity to ROK is uncanny. Also a left footer, his kicking action mimicks ROK's almost to a T.
I thought Brabazon really stood out today. He seems to have put on some muscle, definitely noticeable in the upper arms. He found a lot of the ball and used it intelligently.

I took some videos and photos, and I'll upload some tomorrow.

I guess Schneider is the obvious one depending how they rate his match fitness. He cruised through the match today, kicking a few goals here and there.

I don't see any of the 3 emergencies named today coming in.

I only saw the last quarter but i have to say that Simpkin is a gun and an attacking weapon in the midfield that we have been crying out for.

                    Get him in there.

No chance. I am sick of reading about our youngsters and then having to sit through watching the Jude Boltons and Benny Matthews take up their spot.

When will enough be enough Mr Roos?

Can't say I noticed much about Simpkin apart from the fact he was wearing that GPS tracking system.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, Aaron Rogers kicked two goals for Eastlake.

                          Laidlaw clearly our best. Outstanding.

Simpkins and Jack next best with Schnieder and Sam Rowe prominent.

Schmidt went off 2nd quarter, changed into his tracksuit and sipped Gatorade with the seniors. He didn't seem to be injured at all. Methinks that one of the seniors may have woke up a bit scratchy and they got word out to take Schmidt off in case.

They pretty much always rest at least one of the emergencies in the second half of the reserves game, just in case. I don't think it means anyone is doubtful - just a precaution in case anything goes wrong immediately before the game starts.

Occasionally they take two of the emergencies off. That probably is more of a sign that one of the seniors might be slightly doubtful.

                              Well bugger me.

I've seen just about every reserves game played in Sydney in the last 20 years and have never noticed that, ever.

I'll be watching with interest the rest of the year, as I'm sure you couldn't be mistaken.

You may recall comments made by Roos about Vogels last year and how hard it was to get decent match time into him because he was so often the 'first emergency'. Playing away, he often travelled with the seniors and could only get back to play with the reserves if they played the next day. And when played in Sydney it was very frequent that he'd only get to play half a game.
