    Jolly

I have a feeling that Jolly is just plain not very good. I know he had a great first game two years ago and has kicked a couple of big goals from fifty (even then they were awkward kicks)...but there are a whole lot of things WRONG with his game.

    (1) Probably the worst player in the league below his knees...simply cannot pick up the ball, turns like the queen mary, fumbles nearly all the time.

    (2) Over and over and over again the opposition ruckman gets a possession when the tap is indecisive and the ball bobbles back toward the ruckmen. he is ALWAYS beaten in this instance....it looks like luck a lot of the time but it can't be because it never "luckily" bounces back into Jolly's arms.

    (3) His kicking for goal is poor, even for a Ruckman

    (4) he gives away an enormous amount of free kicks in the ruck and also in marling contests.

    (5) He simply doesn't get enough possessions, which means that he is not presenting appropriately, either from lack of fitness, lack of guts (to run hard) lack of footy nouse (to get to the right spots) lack of guts (to run to position instead of traling the other ruckman araound

    (6) his defensive work is very poor, notwithstanding that he has taken some very good pack marks on the goal line. his opponent gets away from him or outpositions him in one on ones way too often

    (7) Tap work is barely average at best. Doesn't win a great deal of hit.-outs and when he does they are very rarely to advantage. he makes poor choices regarding his taps...ie a poor bounce goes toward our goal and down the line...because of the poor bounce there are no clear options for a tap down but momentum of the ruckmen is towards our goal. Jolly reaches the ball first but instead of smacshing it forward he tries to finesse it to no one and the ball (inevitably) goes out near where the other throw in was. This really infuriates me!

    (8) Arrogance. Big call here, but I think Darren rates himself waaaaay above his output. Evidence? Well - taking the above into account he seems to be very comfortable with himself...and then he does things like getting a free reversed...12 point turnaround. worse when he is losing a ruck contest he takes it so badly that he infringes and in consequence gives them free use of the ball when all we would have lost was a (probably) inconsequential tap out. when will thes stupid ruckmen understand that a lost hit-out doesn't cost much, but a lost free kick is ENORMOUS.

I would bring Doyle back IMMEDIATELY and drop Jolly until he starts to actually receive, not fumble, kick straight, be accountable.

Everything said here is 100% right. I lost count of the number of times he would stuff things up and another player would run over to him and give him some encouragement. They must get sick of it. The coaches must get sick of it. But Darren just cruises on thinking he's a gun ruckman.

This isn't whipping boy stuff. He can't play. It's that simple. Other teams know that now. That's why he's getting outmarked by guys 3 inches shorter than him. They back themselves cos they know he won't hurt them in a marking contest.

I don't think he totally understands who is paying his wages here. It isn't the home delivery nappy man, it's a professional footy club.

Problem is he's a backup ruckman not the main ruckman.

He played very well for Melbourne and did a good job for us in '05. Since then he has been our main ruckman, but he hasn't developed at all since we recruited him and he's not up to par as the first ruckman.
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

You forgot to mention discipline. Right from his first game with us he has given away rough up type, tough man frees away, and he is the only player in the side to do so. He is the only one who deliberately retaliates and I think for the other 21 who play a game is one of our greatest strengths, the mental toughness to turn the other cheek.

Jolly should go home and play daddy. Let's drop him and bring in Doyle.

the worst thing ever, last night when baz charged through two eagles and then had his neck ripped off by wirrapunda, jolly got the free reversed, that could've been the biggest momentum booster. silly silly free kick.

Last night I went down to the Viewing Room after the game - not sure if any of you have done this but it's kinda weird, like looking at a petting zoo. All the players are warming down, getting their many and varied parts iced, etc.

A very glum atmosphere as you can imagine. When I left (& this must have at least 45 mins after the game) the only player remaining was a very unjolly Darren, who had spent the entire time staring into the middle distance, as tho watching his AFL career fly by.

BTW, not sure if there has been a report on this but Malceski was hobbling even more than the other players - I suspect there might be an issue, but let's hope it's not too bad. He was one of our few shining lights on the night.

I concur with Nico, Jolly just needs some more discipline. Once Everitt hits his straps that put pressure on Jolly to perform better

                      He had another terrible game....

I think he should try to become more of the Clark Keating type ruckman, rather than a tap ruckman.

This was a game where our ruckmen should have dominated, especially with no Big Cox. Sadly, we were ripped apart by Seaby....!?!

Didn't Roos indicate that he might play Doyle, Spida and Jolly in the same game if they were all fit?

That's not a bad thing. Perhaps he was taking a long hard look etc. I hope he can turn it into some sort of resolve. And it did look as though he was dragged after the reversed free, which would be almost a first for Roos. It is frustrating to see in a player who has done (and I think can still do)
                          better.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

He was dragged and went straight on the phone (which he appeared to almost immediately throw down).

Mea culpa - I amongst others here bagged Jolly for his first up effort. I think he's bounced back tremendously.

There was a stat on Saturday's telecast that suggested he's #2 for hit-outs in the competition and he had another excellent night last week. There is no question he's our #1 ruckman atm & he deserves some credit for bouncing back.
