    Roles

I'm not against healthy discussion, I'm against knee jerk bagging of players when we don't even know what their role was in a particular game. Benny may have been told to not worry about possessions, just sit on a bloke. Was Vogels told to lead up to make space for others behind him? Was Jude told to stay in the pocket to try and keep Wirrapunda at home and players told to avoid kicking to him? Only the coaches are qualified to assess the game of any player because they are the only ones who truly know what any player's role was.

Sure we can comment on a player fumbling, or miskicking, or dropping a mark, but looking at the number of kicks, HB's etc is a complete and utter waste of time.
Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.

Mathews was on Braun and actually did a decent defensive job on him.

J Bolton was on Wirrpanda, but did nothing to stop him or to give us anything.

I think sometimes people get criticism confused with negativity.

As was Davis, which would have been a good matchup if Davis didn't get injured.

Shouldn't that read "Wirrpanda was on Bolton" or "Wirrpanda was on Phillips" etc? Since when is a forward assigned a defender??

In more recent times this is happening because some teams use a "defender", in reality someone playing in the backline, as the catalyst for a lot of their attacking moves, so by negating them you can go a long way to shutting down the opposition.

I understand your thinking, but do you think it was John Worsfold that said "Wirrpanda, you go to Jude Bolton" or did Roos say "Jude, you stick with Wirrpanda"?

The way I see it, the opposition coach will see 6 forward line players lining up, and he arranges his defenders accordingly to pick them up....

Just that. That criticism is part of healthy discussion and this is the forum to do just that. Discuss that is, whether it be with lavish praise, or pure spite. So stick around. This place needs more positive people like yourself. Just don't expect it to be a fun trip. Ask Bron if u want an explanation of that.

It could be a case of both. Hard to really know. But it's not uncommon now to see someone playing in the forward line whose primary job is to negate a creative player from the opposition playing in the backline (eg a Hodge, Gilbee etc) and if they happen to hurt them offensively it's an added bonus.

Since defenders provide a lot of rebound. I suspect that Wirrpanda will pick up the small forward and Roos would have tried to orchestrate for either that forward to play deep or to get a forward to tag him.

.. and at one stage very late in the match i noticed Phillips on Judd! Dunno how long for, but Judd's exhaustion and cramp may have led coaching staff to switch the young fella onto him to free up Goodsey up forward. Might have to review the tape .. err .. I mean HDD, one more time to confirm this.

Hmm, interesting. The best way to nullify a rebounding defender is to take a mark and kick a goal...rather than "tag".

Yes, to an extent. The best way to stop them is to make them accountable and this is why I thought Davis would have been good and J Bolton didn't do enough. However, when the forward doesn't get the ball, they need to be close to their man to stop their rebound. If a not-so-effective forward is on Wirrpanda then he will cheat and leave them, taking a punt they won't hurt him in attack.

Your eyes didn't deceive you. I'm not sure whether it was a determined move, or just a case of Phillips deciding to latch on to the closest opponent he could find, and coming up with Judd. I think it was only for a few minutes.

You are not negative and put up a reasonable opinion and I am so pleased that you didn't have to qualify yourself on a dollar basis as some think this is important to supporting our club.....I just like positive forward thinking debate and not doomsaying negativity.
hang on a sec - if we didnt love the team or the club, then why would we bother parting with our hard earned? I know that there are highs and lows, but to most people joining a footy club is a luxury, so naturally they, like most normal people, expect a reasonable return for the money they have outlayed. IF you have loads of dosh to throw away and not give a fig, good luck too you. but most dont.

You cant be positive all of the time. Last Saturday night was a perfect example - whilst there was only one point in it, we still should have won given the scoring opportunities we had . Leo was not up to the task of being FB, and why they persisted with having Goodes run with Judd is beyond me.
We could go on and on - and whilst none of us are coaches of the team we love, we have the right to say if we are happy or not happy with the teams performance. Just like your boss does if you stuff up at the office!
