    Midfield's reading of spiders taps

Spider got alot of taps to the right spot but our midfielders were either to close and fumbled the ball or were caught behind in defensive rolls. If spider continues to play like that we should back our midfielders to gain first possesion rather than guard against opposition midfielders. Especially against sides like Richmond

The highlight for me of the game occurred right in front of me....when Spida tapped the ball and O'Keefe read it well and goaled.

I got the same feeling as I got when we got Plugger in 95. "At last we have someone we can rely on to kick goals" On Saturday it was" At last someone who can win the ruck and use it effectively" It was like a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders.(I take my role seriously)

We were laughing as to how Spida was in serious cruise control all day. He'd saunter over to where the ball was, then he'd do his bit then start sauntering over to the next ball-up etc etc

That having been said, he tap rucking skills are far above anything we have had for years. The onballers as well as the forwards are going to love his skill of tapping the ball straight to a waiting roving type as occured with the O'Keefe goal.

Yes, he often looks awkward and slow. But his skill at centre bounces and ball ups is going to prove invaluable this season. Unlike in previous years, we have a ruckman who can do more than just bash the ball anywhere with his fist at ball-ups.

Spider has always played this way. From the first time i watched him play a full game in the mid 90s.

I still have vision of spider taunting one of the swans the night the saints flogged us by 100 and he was one of the BOG. Since that night i always though having spider at the swans and especially at the SCG would be a great thing.

I am looking forward to his first game at the SCG as he has dominated against us a few times whilst at the saints and the hawks.

I know the one you mean. 101 points, and Spida twirling the ball on one finger on the members wing.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Its an interesting problem we have. Now that we have a tap ruckman, do we completely change our midfield from defense to offense.
Guys like Bolton, Matthews, McVeigh, even Ablett may find themselves out of contention if we put our top flight players in the midfield: Davis, Kennelly, etc.

It would be a massive shift in focus.

Somehow i suspect Roos has a plan to cope with the problem of winning more ruck ball...

And who is Adam Pattison? Golly, you'd hope Spida would win these taps. Don't forget we played West Coast Eagles without Dean Cox in their team as well. Spida is OK, but let's not pin our hopes on him....

I don't think it is so much people pinning their hopes on Spida, more people hoping that with Spida we will finally have a complete midfield. One that is not just defensive but attacking as well.
