IMHO, notwithstanding those stats, we get a much better run from the umps these days than we did in 2004 & 2005, especially post the infamous Demetriou "ugly footy" comments. In those years, some of the umpiring just crucified us - I rarely think the umpiring impacts our games these days, & frankly we occasionally do quite well out of it (not that I'd ever admit to that on BF!).

When you're first to the ball and make the play you tend to get more free kicks.
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Give me a break. When in Perth you can actually see the umpires waiting on the crowd before they make a decision. Last weekend against Collingwood, there was a questionable holding the ball decision that went in the Eagles favour, and the umpire waited a good 5 seconds as the crowd of WC bogans were booing, before giving the sooks a free kick. Happens every time!

I think the umpires are brainwashed into assuming all Sydney players drag the ball under because we're defensive, yet when a WC player holds the ball in, he apparently couldn't get it out. I can't remember the last holding the ball decision that went against them, besides the absolutely obvious ones that the umpires can't avoid, but if it's 50/50, they'll get away with it everytime.

That myth still doing the rounds ?

We often have more possessions than other teams, yet less free kicks.

Maybe we should trade a bit of Blood for the Shinboner Spirit.

Possessions don't always mean much. Sometimes they're racked up by going sideways.

As often discussed on this board, we have a defensive midfield, an undersized backline, and some clumsy players, so it's not overly surprising we give away a lot of free kicks.

Still doesn't alter the fact that you only have to watch a game to realise that all players are not treated equally by umpires. I'm sure it is subconscious, but some do seem to have pre-conceived ideas on certain players.

The Pies were undoubtedly crucified by the umpires at Subi last week. Kerr and Judd could do what they wanted in terms of trying to break tackles and then dropping the ball without getting penalised. And Presti took a great mark on the wing, making contact with Judd in front with his body as he lept, not a hand in sight. All the umpire saw was Judd being outmarked and just assumed he must have been infringed and awarded a free. Not claiming this cost the Pies the game - Eagles looked like they'd always get home - but evidence in my eyes (without the handicap of looking through just one) and some players get favourable decisions based on reputation. Hird has received them all throughout his career, everytime anyone has even laid just a finger on him.

I wouldn't disagree with that (eg: Judd virtually never gets called for HtB).

Neither does Hall. He'll get pinged for everything else under the sun - but you'll almost never see HtB against him. It's funny how some players get away with some things, and get crucified on others.

But if you really want to see a player who the umpires crucify, watch Tredrea. The only way he could get a free kick is if the fullback pulled out a gun and shot him

Only if it was in the back.
