Just revisiting a theme of mine in the past few years on goalkicking. It seems obvious, but we need to do a little better with the number of goals we kick per game. We have a great forward line, but we need to utilise it a little more effectively.
In the past two and a bit seasons we have kicked 13 goals or more 30 times, winning 29 of those games. We have kicked 12 goals 5 times, going 2-3. And when we have kicked 11 goals or less we are 6-13. Of those 16 losses, if we had kicked just a couple of extra goals we would have won possibly half of those games. So, that could mean a difference of perhaps 2 wins per year, which could mean 2 higher places on the ladder. In a close competition every win is crucial.
Simple message is play good defence and reasonable offence, kick 13 goals, and we should win. Now locking down the game is part of the reason why we limit the opposition from scoring, which naturally has an impact on our own scoring. However, we do get the ball Inside 50 enough to score more goals, but we waste opportunities, often through poor delivery to the forwards.
In 2006 we were 6th in most goals kicked, 14th in 2005, 9th in 2004 and 6th in 2003.
Not kicking many goals per game and then requiring us to suddenly kick a lot when losing is a big ask and sometimes, unsurprisingly, we fall short. Even when it appears we've made a great comeback, we don't kick many goals (eg: second half against WC in GF 06 = 8 goals, second half against WC rd 1 = 7 goals).
We need to kick more goals!
