    National Anthem

Should players sing Our National Anthem? Given this week being the ANZAC round it brings a question to mind. Should players sing the National Anthem pre match?

My answer is yes always. No matter when it's not hard to remember the words (exclusions to those players who are not Australian).

I have very strong feelings on this. There is no reason not to.

BTW I always stand for our anthem even if in my lounge room watching on TV ( I guess hence my question and views)

ALL our players are Aussie - perhaps not by birth, but at least have the paperwork!!!!!

IMO, seeing the boys sing the anthem is pretty good, great seeing a bit of pride in the Anthem. It is slowly getting a lot better in Australia though, perhaps since the 2000 Olympics.

We are still one of those cultures that seems to get embarrased showing a bit of emotion when our National anthem is played though.

This is an interesting question. Generally I would say yes. However, Military protocol deems that it is played and not sung during a Military ceremony (Which an ANZAC day ceremony is.) If it is sung during aforementioned ceremonies, Military personnel who would normally salute during the anthem are not required to do so.

You can always pick current or former Military personnel during the National Anthem , they are always the ones standing at attention.

Only for big matches. For me it marks out games like the ANZAC week game and finals as something a bit special. If it were done every week, it would become a big ho-hum, I reckon, just another part of the every week procedure before the game gets underway.

Yes, I totally agree with Liz. It should be played on special occasions only. Should the players sing it? I'm not sure about that one, especially when they trying to concentrate on the game. I think it would be up to an individual.

Its a free country. To sing or not to sing, it's their choice. As long as they respect the anthem I have no problem with what they do.

I agree with Liz. The anthem identifies the occasion as something special. If they did it every round, it won't make those special occasions that much more unique.

I agree. It would also move us one step closer to American like nationalism if it were played every game.

In my state at 3am this morning, I read this thread the wrong way , I agree with Liz that the anthem should be saved for special games.

The idea of having the National Anthem for every game(Which would be silly) made me have a flashback to my childhood when the National Anthem was always played at the Cinema before the movie....and it was God Save the Queen.

                      How wierd was that?

As it is they dont play the anthem at every game anyway - but if they play it at the start of the season (cant remember if they did or not at Telstra Stadium a few weeks back) then yes. Anzac Day - absolutely yes, and the Finals Series (again yes) which is what they do now so why change it. I must say that being in the crowd last night and actually hearing the crowd sing the anthem was wonderful - I hadn't heard it sung like that since the Rugby World Cup. My Great Great Uncle Peter Dodds McCormick (the composer and tight arsed old bugger who left the rights of the anthem to the Presbyterian Church) would have been very proud.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

                          Why?

I think it's a bit stupid to have footballers and war mentioned in the same breath.

It's about as poignant as singing a song once a year for that Melbourne footballer who died in the tsunami.

Sad, and he WAS a footballer, but IMO it's not what the game should represent.

Just my opinion, but lining up and singing the national anthem for any occasion (except perhaps on Australia Day or when they are actually representing the country in Ireland etc) is weird to me.

These players are not presenting their national pride when they kick an oval shaped ball, they are playing to win a prize.

Another thing I find very strange is having to remove one's hat during the national anthem. Or wearing a hat in an RSL.
                          Outdated and silly traditions.
Shouldn't we be taught how to stand at attention properly, and salute the flag for that matter?

But whatever, the world is a weird place I guess.

They didn't ask (or I didn't hear) last night at the SCG, but they did ask patrons at the Essendon/Collingwood game to remove hats for the Last Post.
