Reserves Report. - A Contest At Last

    A Contest at last

Thanks to Ian, for another great review.

And for the major effort he made to get to the game on time, and back again to see the one's at great personal "risk".

Sorry, no photos this week. unless someone else has some.

Great report. Thanks. Sounds like a tops day at the footy.

Sad to hear (with MySpace White) that our injury list gets ever-longer. We just need a couple of injury-free weeks to stem the (metaphorical) bleeding, and we should be fine.

Interesting how (like in any game of footy) different people will gather different impressions of the best players, contrasting Ian's report with the official report and ROKL's report. Broad themes are similar, but those singled out for praise (and criticism) are often different. Ian would be raising eyebrows that Simpkin was named in the best players, and having apoplexy that Bevan cracked it as well! I'd have to say there's some slight concern on my part that Flipper, who started the season in white-hot form, isn't doing more. But I guess he gets an allowance of one 'off' match. Interesting (well, actually incompetent) also that the official report has it that MySpace White played. Maybe he broke his finger trying to open a MB for Ian in the changerooms before the game?

I for one feel pretty optimistic about the fact that the Donk was given a specialist forward's role for a part of the 2s, and seemingly did it well. It hopefully means that-- under the dry Dome roof, and with St K being far from the speediest team in the comp-- he's preparing to give the Donk a go, and try a 3-ruck strategy with a big bloke camped permanently up in the square.

Or as the kids said in 2006, 'PLONK THE DONK!'

My injury informant was an old guy (in official club gear) on our interchange bench. He said Mocca broke a finger at training on Thursday, also that DOK's hammie was not a bad one.

I was not that surprised that the official report named Bevan one of the best - he did get plenty of the ball. But my assessment system heavily marks down blokes who get caught with the ball, commit clangers or try to be superheroes against the better interest of the team.

Flipper is not going that badly, he nearly got on my best list. But among the midfielders, I judged Laidlaw, Thornton and Brabazon as better.

Your comments on O'Dwyer are encouraging. From what I saw of him last week (admittedly very limited viewing) he looks like he could be a bit of a play maker, rather than an endurance stopper. Will definitely keep a look out for how he goes over the rest of the year.

O'Dwyer's 1st qtr behind, as mentioned in the report, was a classic example of what people are crying out for from the seniors. He burst through the middle, had a couple of bounces, ran to 40, ignored players on their own in better positions, and sprayed the shot on the run. I thought he had a good game to Ian. Good report. We sat in the sun on the NE corner of the ground and most of the action seemed to be on your side. I am glad that you agreed that Brabazon and Thornton set up the win in the third - I think that that was the difference between the two teams, that 15 minutes or so. I was not as impressed with Reg as you were, just thought he could not get into the game. Brennan is only in 2nd gear I reckon, he does not look to get too involved I agree. Wasn't it a nice day to be at the footy.

17 degrees, cloudless sky, hardly any wind, ground in perfect order. Conditions for players and fans alike could hardly have been any better. It's a fact that peolpe sitting on opposite sides of the ground can come away with dramatically different opinions - largely I guess because there is a subconcious tendency to take more note of what happens in front of you. Distance also impairs accuracy, invariably the goal scores I get wrong are scored on the other side, even though I'm often certain at the time. Unfortunately for Bevo, he committed several clangers right in front of me. I've found that without the aid of note taking it is very easy for me to attribute a good game to somebody when in fact they have not played that well - a couple of flashy acts can leave that impression. Call it the "Goodes factor" if you like. Opposite also applies. So I make a tick on one side if a player does something good, two ticks for something super good - accurate pass, good mark, 1%er, accurate ruck tap, whatever, and a cross on the other side for clanger, poor decision, lack of effort etc. At the end whoever has the biggest margin between ticks and crosses gets my BOG.

I also had the impression that Grundy hadn't done much, but the ticks and crosses said otherwise. Incidentally, the system has Earl Shaw as the undisputed clanger king of the twos, invariably he ends up with a nett one or zero. he does some good things , then cancels then right out again. We've been saying he is green for two years now, its about time he started to ripen. Brennan's lack of enough ticks and crosses currently just show plain lack of involvement in the game.

Hey Ian, thanks for the report, is it possible that the "top up" player you refered to as Wilkerson may have been Wilkinson? It's just that if so he is a boy from down my way that I played at school with. If it is him, any more information on how he went?

Very possible, as one source had him as Wilkerson, another as Wilkinson. I tossed a coin! The kid can play though, certainly did not look out of place as a lot of the top ups do.

OK thanks mate, I'm pretty sure he's only 17. So thats a pretty good effort. Hope he gets a few more games and can impress more.

Swans' site has him listed as Wilkinson.

Laidlaw must be close to getting a game.

We need the pace and line breaking ability.

Great news on O'Dwyer. I saw him last week and he has a bit of Scott Harding about him.

He impressed me in his debut a few weeks ago.

Mind you, with our record at giving up and comers a go, he may need a bit of Tonya Harding about him if he wants to break thru.

Though Vogels, Grundy, Bevan, Phillips and now Jack indicate that maybe you have a better chance if you come via the rookie list than if you go straight onto the senior list.

So there is hope for him yet!
