Darcy Daniher - F/S selection possibility

Young Darcy Daniher who plays for Aberfeldie in the local competition, played for Calder Cannons in their recent loss to NSW/ACT Rams and was named as one of the best on the ground. He has also been named in the Vic Metro Squad for the National Championships.

The young man stands at about 192cm (but also has been quoted at 195cm) and is a key position player (like his father Anthony Daniher).

Our team is bereft of large key position players (with skill). I haven't personally seen him play but wonder if anyone else has? Problem is that he plays in the old Essendon zone and is coached by David Flood (old Essendon player) so if it was a choice of either Essendon or Sydney he may choose Essendon.

I just wonder if the Swans have been in contact and/or are keeping an eye on his progress in the juniors.

Of course he will go to Essendon,just look at the track record the Swans have with recruiting youngster from there own backyard its @@@@ed.

He'll go to Essendon. They have kept a close tab on him and publically said they are looking at him as a F/S pick up.

While we haven't said anything publically like Essendon, we have been keeping an eye on him since last year and we are certainly taking a good hard look at him with the view of picking him up via the F/S rule. With the changes to the F/S rule it might come down to a case of Essendon of having to to "outbid" us (or any other AFL club for that matter) for the kid's drafting rights and that could lead anywhere if Essendon rate him differently to what we (or any other club rates him) and puts a better draft pick on the table than Essendon.

A player has to agree to be a father-son pick. Presumably Daniher will first have to choose which, if either, club he agrees to go to as a FS pick.

Then it isn't up to that club to bid a pick. Other clubs can indicate a pick they will take him by and the FS club must match the round. If he were to select Essendon but we were sitting ahead of them in draft order (not beyond the realms of possibility given current form) I don't believe we could gazump Essendon just because we have a higher pick in any given round.

Correct. It will be like a game of poker. Whether we really want him or not, we could put a first round pick on the board and then force Essendon to use theirs to get him.
