Devil hits the post; post hits McGuane

McGuane was playing for Coburg in the VFL against the Tasmanian Devils at Bellerive Oval when he was injured.

He and Devils player Mark Westfield were running back towards the goals with the flight of the ball when Westfield crashed into the post.

It snapped off at the base and landed on McGuane who had run through the posts and was standing behind the square.

It was a huge hit, and the post broke off at ground level.

McGuane had gone past the post and was stopping before the boundary. He has his back to the post as it fell onto his shoulder.

that happened at a St Kilda/Collingwood game back in the old Moorabin days (1986 or 87) - I was there (with the bloke at the time)- it was about 5 minutes into the second quarter when Lockett and Daicos (who was on him for some reason) ran to get the ball - they both hit the goal post and it snapped at the base. So they go it up again but a groundsman had to stand there and hold the post for the rest of the quarter. He got a bit frightened when Locket was running towards him again - as you would, so naturally he felt that his life would be cut short if he stayed there, he just let go of the post and ran to the fence. It was hilarious - so at half time there was a flurry of groundsmen nailing the post in using stake posts to support it a bit more and a mile of gaffer tape which went up the post as far as the tallests bloke could reach. It made for a memorable afternoon.
