Of all the youngsters playing in the ACTAFL, Rowe strikes me as the one who could turn into that key backman we've been craving. Yesterday he starred up forward but even before then he's impressed me with his unflappability and level head. He generally makes the right decision re marking / spoiling and does the basic things right. At 196cm he's not tall enough for an AFL ruckman but is a great height as a key defender. It's a shame he is on the rookie list because if the rest of the season does go to poo, he'd be an interesting one to throw down there to see how he goes.

On Phillips, one thing I noticed about him yesterday was his tackling. He's always a bit of a terrier and gets to a lot of contests but his tackling technique yesterday looked very good, making a concerted effort to get to the hips of his opponent and to use what limited body weight he has to best advantage. I wonder if that's something they've been specifically targetting with him.

And just one comment on the "hungry" tag. He certainly was gifted a few easy goals yesterday but in other matches he has seemed as intent on laying off for a team mate as he was yesterday in cashing in on their work. I don't see him as an overly selfish player around goal.

I'm sure I've posted it before, but reserves GF last year I was speaking to Crouchy on the field before the presentations. He sat in the coaches box for the day and he said it was generally conceded that Rowe was BOG playing CHB on the Belconnen Captain/Coach and long time gun, Stephen Maher.

As so often happens, he didn't get the official nod for BOG, but obviously the Swans heirachy set him a role and he performed it to perfection.

Very good overhead and takes more contested marks than most.
