    Draft Lists

I wanted to post a "scathing" comparison of all the number 5 drafts, but discovered that I can't get this info online.

afl.com is supposed to have it listed 1) by year and 2) by team....but they only have 2001 - 2005!!!! - can you believe they don't have the 2006 draft listed? AND 2004 and 2005 are THE SAME LIST!!!!!

They used to have it by team but they changed even that so now you have (under Bulldogs for example) just 7 or 8 years listed out of 20 or so and most of those links don't work.

I can't find this info anywhere online so I guess someone with actually printed almanacs would have to do it...

    Can anybody help?

    Cheers

Your research might also include Mark Kinnear and Jason Saddington as well.

Really a yearly comparison won't do much good because they were different years. I think looking at the draft McVeigh was in would be a better indication. Then on the other hand you need to balance it by people like Goodesy and OKeefe, The Eski etc.

Time better spent doing other things I think......

Looking at it - there are only two things of note about the 2002 draft.

        1. How cod ordinary the entire draft is. Bugger all top flight players at all, and certainly no true elite players.

        2. How the hell did Malceski get through so far?

A few months back I read a post on Big Footy by someone big noting themselves being very scathing of Malceski. They claimed their father had coached him and considered him gutless. Maybe that filtered into the recruiting system.

He must have grown out of it. That hit he took last year and he got back up was pretty gutsy to me.

Couldn't be bothered going through and doing the legwork myself, but I would very confidently predict that there would be a significant proportion of #5 picks who would have played fewer games in their career, than McVeigh has already played.

I know that comparing post-'97 (few draft restrictions, a relatively scientific system of draft selection) and pre-'97 (lots of anomalous rules and restrictions to boost clubs or protect zones, a fairly agricultural system of finding blokes) is cheating a bit, but a team called the Sydney Swans picked up a bloke called Jason Spinks at #5 in the 1992 national draft.

Weak draft. Not every pick 5 turns out ok.

McVeigh is under more scrutiny at the swans because he's about the best pick we've had in the last 6 or 7 years.

Roos sees something in him. He may become a good player. But at the moment he is not, and should not be in the team. I think it would actually do him good to go back to the 2's for a few weeks and rack up a couple of 40 possession games. Get some confidence back.

Agree. I still have hope for him and he is still young enough. But he's hurting us too much in the seniors. Time for him to go in flat track bully mode in the ressies.

I still feel Roos is using him completely wrong.

How should he be using him them???

One things does come to mind. His pack shark and goal in the first mins. against the Power was very very good. Maybe he is a perm. crumbing forward and we gotta start bombing it in a bit more.
                        Who knows...............

Small Forward. He has enough instincts to be a pretty good small forward. His goal kicking will improve.

This is of course if Simon Phillips doesn't get the chance.

Spot on. It was a cracking piece of play and he displayed sublime skills that would be the envy of any other player in the AFL today, yesterday and tomorrow.

But I defy you to name ONE other piece of play that was HALF as good as that from him this year.

The draft is pretty flawed anyway.

Yes it picks up the top ten players or so running around in the juniors, but that's about it. Take into consideration other factors such as injuries, kids failing to develop, them losing interest in the game, and suddenley, only about half of these ten supposed elite players of the future will have any sort of longevity or actually play more than a handfull of games.

Then you get the likes fo MO'L, Goodes, Malceski, etc going in the 40's and beyond at the draft. Go figure. For the most part, it's about the recruiting department spottind something someone else doesn't. That and a @@@@ load of luck!
